Spruce Row Farm

Spruce Row Farm Spruce Row Farm is family owned and operated by the Peters family in Meadville, PA. We have a milking herd of 275 Jerseys and raise 220 heifers. Ask questions!

We are the Peters family in Meadville PA and we are a family of dairy farmers! We own 450 Jerseys cows and raise all of our own crops. Our parents, Jeff & Janet, are fourth generation farmers and have been on the farm for more than 30 years. Jess, graduated from PSU with an Animal Sciences degree and Cole graduated from Penn Tech with a degree in Diesel Mechanics and are both now home full-time. I

n 2012, Cole married Michelle (a certified Vet Assistant) and by the end of the year she was our full-time calf feeder. We've always thought we had a fun way of viewing our farming lifestyle and have been looking for a better way to share it with others! The average American has no direct contact with the people who grow and raise their food, and in a world with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram we think that's crazy! So like our page and share it with your friends! Share stories, photos, and articles! We're hoping to show you all how much we care about our animals and each other while teaching you about this impossible business that we love! :)

I’ve been gone for so long I’m shocked that any of you even remember me.

But in case you do…
And in case you’ve been going through something too…
You never have been and never will be alone.

One of the smartest, yet craziest things about our milk barn is that we have a gravity flow manure pit.

Most barns use pumps to move the manure from the barn to the pit, but we had enough fall to let it all flow naturally. It has its ups and downs.

Up: no mechanical equipment to maintain. We don’t have to remember to grease anything or get stuck fixing/replacing parts on weekends or holidays or in -20 degree weather (because that’s ALWAYS when things break).

Down: occasionally it gets plugged if the 💩 isn’t liquid enough (too much sawdust or solid manure, it happens more often in the summer when the alleyways dry out faster in hot weather)

But no fear! We have our ways.

So enjoy this slightly gross yet incredibly satisfying time lapse video of the manure finally sliding down the pipe. 😂😜

Hey guys. It’s been a while. But today’s good news prompted a post.

We bed most of our barns with sawdust. But we haven’t been able to get a load since November (anyone else having similar issue?) Things were getting messy.

So yesterday, when the semi pulled in, everyone gave a little cheer. And this morning, the few cows not laying in the freshly bedded stalls are eating. ❤️

It’s not just about having a comfy place to lay to make our cows happy, cows pump 40% more blood when they’re laying down. The more blood they pump, the more milk they make.

But also, it’s pretty freaking sweet to see your cows comfy and happy. Now if the temperature would just stay above 20 degrees their lives would be almost perfect. 😉

I’ve been on an ear tag crusade for the last few months. There’s something supremely satisfying in replacing lost ear tags. So every time we have to lock cows for the vet or hoof trimmer, we put tags in ear tag-less cows.

Except for Yorky.

For months, Yorky has eluded us. Like, she’s never in a headlock. I’m assuming she eats, because she’s alive and she gives milk. But she is NEVER in a headlock.

Until yesterday.

When I tell you it was a big win, I mean for everyone. Like the entire farm won - there was cheering (mostly from me, but still…). Our vet was very confused. So I’m not sure she believed us when we told her we were going to celebrate with an ice cream cake, but that’s exactly what we did.

In hindsight, I should’ve explained better to the Dairy Queen employee when I told her what I wanted written on the cake.

1) she had to ask her boss if she could write it (apparently they aren’t allowed to write swear words on cakes)
2) When I told Cole about it, he made me see that she probably thought I was some sort of assassin.

So yeah, we finally got the SOB.
But we may need to change Dairy Queen’s.
🤣🤣🤣

Our skid loaders are a bit of a mess right now. They’ve both had a lot of little problems that have added up to be big problems which has led to a lot of inconvenient overheating. 🤦‍♀️

is our in-house mechanic, but he’s also our jack of all things. So finding the time to tear the machine apart and put it back together hasn’t been easy.

Well, yesterday he finally got it done! And not a minute too soon. Today, that loader will be heading to the field to load hay.

I’d say nice work, , but it’s clear (second photo) that he had an expert assistant. 🤣🤣
PS - those wrenches are just lost forever now.

About a month ago I started feeling a lot of things. Between farm life, family life, my life, and everything else happening the world, it felt too heavy. So I started right listing all the things I was feeling at the end of the day.

I don’t know if it helps, but it kind of amazes me. I’m not sure I believed that anyone could feel that many things at once. But I did. I do. Not necessarily all about the same things, but they’re there. And they’re heavy.

Life hack: Never want to lose or have anyone confuse your flash drive for theirs? Buy one that looks like a turtle. 🥰

Plus it makes me happy. ❤️

These two. 🥰🤣

Somehow farm kids make everything harder and better at the same time. Farming with and for kids is a double edged sword. It feels so good to see them love what we do and want to be part of it. But at the same time, you don’t want them to know and feel the hardship and pain that comes with running a farm.

It can be an amazing life, but it’s not for the faint of heart. ❤️ 💔

This video is a few weeks old but we still talk about the skidloader tire falling off. 🙄🤣
