Did you know that the pawpaw is primarily pollinated by flies and not bees? If you get really close to the blossoms you’ll see they have a faint odor of bad meat! I know it’s strange but years ago I learned this trick from Wynn Dinnsen. Every spring when the pawpaw blossoms bloom, we hang pieces of fish (that’s the catfish connection) from the branches. This encourages fly activity and we feel significantly increases our yields. Our biggest issue with our pawpaw that we’ve had for many years now is that they produce so much fruit we have a lot of breakage. Pretty significant branches will snap under the weight of the fruits on them. I like to think that has at least a little something to do with this fish hanging process. Happy Spring 2026 everyone! .roos
