My very very most favorite sunflowers are in bloom! They’re fist sized when in bud, striped or solid, and offer up a nuance of colors from soft gold to rich chocolate brown. I love making bunches of these special flowers and giving thanks to those who breed innovative seeds for the floral trade.

Oh Dolly, may lovely flowers accompany you all the way to heaven. I hope you know we’ll remember you always for your incomparable legacy of kindness, generosity, wisdom, joy, for reading to children, for lifting this world with song. Thank you Dolly Parton

Flowers grown on an organic farm fall victim to a myriad of voracious insects and they’re susceptible to a few plant virus too, notably to Aster yellows disease which will take down long rows of flowering Asters in no time flat. It turns out Aster yellows disease also attacks Delphinium. We lost a full house of spectacularly tall royal blue Delphinium. But remarkably, as our precious plants died the flowers gifted us with intricate beauty (which of course we harvested!). Nature is generous all the way to the end.

What to do with cut flower Petunias? Put them in a little jar with some frilly Lisianthus! What to do with Didiscus Blue Lace Flower, with their dancing stems, pods, buds, and lightest blue blossoms? Put them in a little jar with some multicolored Lisianthus. It doesn’t take much to be delighted by in-season fresh cut flowers.

Every season we try new flower crops hoping to expand our list of customers’ favorites. New varieties show up on the market as seeds, plugs, bulbs, corms, tubers, cuttings and roots thanks to the work of floriculture researchers for whom we growers are forever grateful Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers. There are lots of us local flower growers in the Rogue Valley, we’ve come a long way with our seasonal offerings.

I needed just one more dahlia to complete the bunch of 10, that’s when I met this handsome little fellow at ease on his mound of colored shaggy petals. He winked, he posed, he stared. I’m pretty sure he smiled.

Maybe you’re wondering where this is going … it’s going to buckets! We’re all about buckets. You’d be amazed how much we love our buckets. Thank you Penny and Lulu~ florist & boutique for returning that mountain of buckets, thank you everyone who comes back with buckets. It’s funny what can make a flower farmer truly happy (and I know I’m not the only one!).

How can you tell it’s an organic flower farm? Well, first it’s the weeds, we’re really good at those. Then it’s the bees who feel safe settling on flowers, the roses which are mighty prickly, but not covered in pesticides or growth hormones, and a surprise encounter with mama robin who deemed it safe to lay her eggs and raise her chicks inside a hoop house full of flowering plants.

We’re half way there this growing season. It’s midsummer in the Rogue Valley under still blessedly clear skies 🙏🏻, the fields look tidy (amazing), the bounty of fresh flowers is almost overwhelming. It’s now, when the sun is still climbing high in the sky that new crops are coaxed into blooming and surprise us every week with their abundance, with new colors, textures, shapes, personalities and reasons to love a life with flowers. Try it!
