Many many years ago my Australian uncle Noel Lothian, then director of the Adelaide Botanical Garden, came to visit bearing a packet of eucalyptus seeds he had collected from around the Botanical Garden. Eucalyptus are mostly native to Australia, there are almost 900 species many of which are extremely successful in the west coast’s Mediterranean climate. They’re all beautiful trees, they grow fast, they’re also mighty dangerous for their high oil content. “Plant these seeds on the farm, away from structures and not in your garden” cautioned uncle Noel. We now have upwards of 500 trees having just planted an additional 200. We grow a limited diversity of species best suited to Oregon’s floral design preferences. We harvest 2, sometimes 3 times a week. I miss uncle Noel’s deep knowledge and long-term, boundless enthusiasm for everything botanical!
