Will and I did a cutout in an abandoned shed last night. The hive was enormous. I forgot to take many pictures in the excitement of it all, but the open section of wall that you see was full of comb from ceiling to floor. We had to open up the section beside it as well. A big, messy rescue and a few lessons learned for next time, but now the bees are safely in our apiary to begin their new life. 🐝

This spring we rescued not one, but TWO colonies out of this dead tree! Doing a tree cutout is always interesting-- the trick is to work slowly and carefully and find the queen. In a large tree, it's easy for her to find a secret crevice to hide in with her devoted caretakers! Once we have the queen, the rest is relatively easy. Both colonies are doing very well now!

The bee yard is buzzing with activity! The bees are working hard these days and filling up their hives with brood and honey. When I lift the lid of a hive, the most lovely floral fragrance of honey greets me. I'm so excited for this year's harvest!

Will did a cutout removal for a customer yesterday. A homeowner called about bees in his house. They were entering into a small hole in the stucco. Will carefully cut out the spot and found a beautiful nest inside the wall. He got the queen, rubber banded brood and honeycomb to frames, and the bees went inside the hive box like well-behaved children. The new colony is now in our apiary, bringing the total hive count to 16! 🐝
