1986. Churchill Downs. The number 1 makes history🐎
Ferdinand wasn't the favorite. He was an 18-1 outsider, a son of Nijinsky II, handed to a 54-year-old jockey who looked like a man from another era. Bill Shoemaker — the winningest rider in history — climbed into the saddle as if time had never moved.
Behind him, a 73-year-old trainer named Charlie Whittingham. Two old men and a longshot. Nobody gave them a chance.
That Sunday in May, Ferdinand broke from post 1 and hit the wire first. No horse wearing that number has won the Kentucky Derby since. Forty years have passed.
But Ferdinand's story doesn't end on the winner's rostrum. It ends in Japan, in a slaughterhouse, in 2002. No fanfare. No farewell. A Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year, reduced to silence by those who should have remembered him.
His death changed things. It sparked the Ferdinand Fee, new contract clauses for horses exported abroad, a wave of outrage that the sport still carries with it.
The Derby is his forever. Nothing and no one can take away that number 1 on his back, that eternal afternoon in Louisville🐎

THIS IS IT.

We just received word that the driver will be here at 9pm to take the final 17 to Canadian slaughter.

This is it.

Nearly every single horse on this load is a gentle standardbred.

They make up nearly 90% of the horses shipped to slaughter for human consumption.

They are kind. They are gentle. The Amish choose them for their excellent work ethic, gentle temperament and trainability.

And when their bodies fail them… they dump them here.

17 horses shipping to slaughter.

17 horses getting ready to die.

Please donate $17 to save the final 17.

This is their last chance before they’re gone forever.

Come on CCR, rise up.
