“We need to lose the red barn mentality”

The red barn mentality is a concept that the consumer believes farmers still have big red barns, cows graze outside and an old man in bib overalls milks the cows.

I fully comprehend how cliche this sounds and I comprehend why people want to dispel this myth. But here’s the thing…

Some of us still house our cows in a big red barn.
Some of us still let our cows out to graze.
Some of us don’t milk large amounts of cows.

There is a place for large farm and more complex systems.
There’s also still a place (and consumer demand) for smaller systems.

It’s important in agriculture to remember that no two management systems or facility set ups are the same. And that’s perfectly ok!

The moral of the story is just like people.. farming comes in all shapes, sizes and barn colors.
And I’m wondering where that old man is hiding in my barn because it’s his turn to milk the cows…
