Ever taken a cow camping? Us neither… until this weekend. Couldn’t find a last minute “calf-sitter” for a Belted Galloway bottle calf, so we threw her in the camper and took her along! Thankfully she was quiet at night and didn’t attract any predators.

Our dun girl “M***a of Treasure Valley” might be the prettiest cow we own. We love her tall, black tipped horns, wispy hair, and thick frame. She’s also easygoing 99% of the time, EXCEPT when she’s having labor pains. You want to give her about 100 yards of space- ask me how I know. 😅

In the second picture, my boys were plucking the grass and making her a “salad” on the rocks.

Third picture shows M***a hanging out with our other dun, our up-and-coming fold sire “KHH Fergusson’s Ragnar”. M***a turns 4 this month and Ragnar turns 3.

DOUBLE trouble! We are ecstatic to announce we were graced with TWIN calves yesterday! Both AHCA silver heifers and both nursing off mom and doing so well, and have not needed any assistance from us…

While we have been so blessed to have human twins (who are now in their terrible twos and running’ me ragged), I am still waiting on a set of calf twins. 🐮🐮

#3 is on the ground 😍. A silver calf just like mama Astrid. Healthy, vigorous and nursing!

Sometimes I think I’m crazy for the amount of time I spend at the window with my binoculars stalking my cows, checking to see if someone is in labor or acting unusual. Sometimes I’m out in the pasture with the binoculars looking to see if the hooves are presenting correctly, or if the calf is latched on nursing, without being too close to stress out the mom. 😅

Six-week-old Jinu & Tatonka🦬

Tatonka goes to the butcher next week. I’m going to miss our seriously awesome pasture pet, but I will definitely not be missing her attitude and rage. 😂 If it weren’t for our steel wire fence, she would’ve gored me on 100 occasions. She sometimes tolerated Zach in the pasture, but she was always out to get me. We hope to get another, less hostile, buffalo in the future.

Let me know if you’re local to the Treasure Valley and want to try some bison burger! My freezer is going to be so FULL.
