In this week’s adventures worlds and wants collided…. I drove north with the ambition of making a ton of homemade pasta to burn through an over abundance of eggs since the girls are laying like gangbusters (seriously sold 24 dozen this week and still had 8 dozen left over: 3 dozen for breakfasts and 5 for pasta). Arrived at the farm to find Paul chomping at the bit to go pull logs off the top fields. Sigh. Secretly hoped for just a couple trips but nope there is two full days of work sitting up there (IF we were lucky). Mother Nature decided to take pity on me Saturday night and not send me back home to a full week of making pasta and quiches solo and sent all the snow making the hills impossible to navigate with the tractor and skid steer safely so we split the weekend: 2 full trailers of logs got cut and moved and 6 batches of pasta were produced. As we cranked out the final batches we decided to go ahead and test it out in homemade chicken noodle soup. Meals for the weekend included 2 of my favorites venison, bacon and mushrooms paired with sautéed asparagus complete with a new pull apart cheesy garlic bread recipe for Sunday dinner and bagels and lox for Sunday breakfast.

In this week’s chaos on the farms: Buggy wore us down and got herself a new critter (apparently it doubles as my new co-worker while she is at school and I am not impressed). Paul and I rescued Caleb’s car from Barneveld where it decided it was done this weekend. Paul and I hit the Lions Christmas dinner Saturday night and made homemade pork belly ramen (a family favorite) for Sunday night dinner. Now have to plan out something spectacular for Paul’s birthday tomorrow (which rounds out my family birthday chaos for 2024 having a September, October, November and December…. Lucky me!)

So awesome when I get to spend more than just a couple days at a time up at the big farm and boy was it a busy week! Another baby shower (so many babies!!!!) and time with family, canning canning and more canning (had to buy a massive shelving unit to ease the pressure on the pantry and to reclaim some counter space). Puppy snuggles, a massive bug invasion, squirrel dispatching from the comfort of the kitchen and an impromptu turtle “hunt”. The best part is always the food. This week the specials were oxtail barley soup and lengua quesadillas (which disappeared before I could even snap a pic)😋

Ah the joys of fall canning… someone should tell Mother Nature the temps should be in the high 40s- low 50s this time of year. ‘Cause running double pressure cookers for multiple rounds a day for several days in a row when the temps are still hovering in the mid-70s is no bueno! But in addition to all the dog food, soups and chilis we’ve managed to put away a winter’s worth of apple pie filling (great short cut when your humans expect a homemade lard crust every time 😝) and then Paul started hauling potatoes out of the garden by the bucketful. I stopped counting after 4. Guess who got to wash all those f*%kers by hand???? Sold a couple goats and piglets and returned our Waygu stud to round out the weekend! Off to fetch tacos and restock on groceries!

This weekend was a mish mash of yardwork (clearing, burning, seeding, gardening) and food prep (chili, 2 soups and marinara) and we took full advantage of the fresh sauce to make a family favorite: duck lasagna. Read: yard clean, kitchen destroyed. So sad that all the wild critters ate our ducks before we could….. but the one from the store was pretty fricking good as well. 😃

Today was dog food day…. Again….. Every dog food day I forget how bad the last dog food day was….. we are fully committed to feeding our fur friends food that is as high quality as what we eat. As fresh as possible. It’s a commitment for sure. It starts with driving to go pick up what feels like a couple hundred pounds of frozen meat, berries and veggies. Then the thawing and cutting and boiling and canning and carrying and cleaning. We did learn a lesson from the last times and set up shop outside instead of totally F’ing up my kitchen and heating up the whole house. The kids have learned to make themselves scarce so they don’t get recruited to help. The excuses aren’t even good anymore…… it will be a long night of turning over batches every 2 hours. But I am so excited for the happy pups and shiny coats that we will see as a result!

Another fun few days at the farm. Moving cattle, mending fence, picking and preparing mullein and the meal masterpiece: Gyoza made with our CCF pasture raised pork. I think the man picks these intricate dishes to make while I am here because I have teeny hands and he doesn’t have to do the folding…..

Whew! Almost forgot I had a farm page to run with the chaotic whirlwind that the Spring brings with kidding, calving and farrowing on both farms; a super sucessful track season that ended with a strong performance at the state meet and summer vacay planning all going on at once (not to mention running and winning a Green County Board campaign) thrown atop a 3 hour one-way commute between farms. It’s been a doozy of a Spring! So grateful to all the farm visitors (new and repeat) that are providing loving farm homes to our Crooked Creek calves, kids, and piglets. We are excited to have a gorgeous waygu bull on the farm with our ladies for the next few months as we plan to big time up our beef game in the coming years. The chicken flock has drastically expanded to provide more eggs to our local buyers. The gardens are in full swing, the fields of corn are thriving in the abundance of rain and the critters are all healthy and happy and in charge of everything 🤣. We managed to escape for a week on a family cruise to the Bahamas and Mexico and are rested and refreshed and ready to tackle summer. If you are still looking for beef calves or IPP piglets we still some available, definitely reach out with inquiries.
Vacation and farm photo dump to follow…..
