One of the things that makes the foals born and raised out on pasture here at Open Spear Ranch so special is the environment they grow up in.

From the very start, these foals learn to navigate the rocky, uneven terrain of our Montana country. They develop sure-footedness, balance, strength, and confidence long before they ever carry a saddle. Every step across the rocks and hills helps prepare them to become dependable, confident partners under saddle.

But it takes more than a good upbringing to make a great horse. Top-notch genetics provide the foundation, giving these foals the potential to grow into well-rounded, versatile horses with the mind, athletic ability, and physical foundation to excel in a wide range of applications.

There are some traditions that never go out of style, and branding day is one of them.

We're honored to have Open Spear Ranch featured in a newspaper article highlighting what branding day means on a working Montana ranch. While it's an important day for identifying and caring for our cattle; it's also a day that brings family, friends, neighbors and generations together to lend a hand.

Behind every calf branded is a team of hardworking people, early mornings, dusty boots, good horses and a shared commitment to the ranching way of life. We're grateful to everyone who helps make these days possible and thankful to the newspaper for taking the time to share a glimpse into this tradition.

Some days it's hard to tell where the ranch ends and the sky begins. Out here at Open Spear Ranch, the panoramic views stretch for miles, reminding us just how special this country truly is.

While the scenery is breathtaking, this year has also brought its challenges. With the ongoing drought, pasture conditions haven't provided the forage our cattle need; so these cow/calf pairs receive hay and cake every day to help keep both cows and growing calves healthy and thriving.

Ranching is about adapting to whatever Mother Nature hands you. We celebrate the beauty, face the challenges head-on, and do everything we can to care for the livestock that depend on us.

It's all part of life at Open Spear Ranch. 🤠🌾🐂

🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July from all of us at Open Spear Ranch! 🇺🇸

As we celebrate the freedoms we hold dear, we're also looking ahead to the future of our program. Here's a glimpse of our beautiful broodmares out enjoying the pasture with this year's foals by their sides, along with Metallic Jackrabbit, the outstanding stallion selected to sire next year's foals with these mares.

We're excited about the quality, athleticism and potential these pairings will bring and can't wait to see what next spring has in store.

🐂 Welcome to the crew! 🐂

Open Spear Ranch is excited to welcome two new bulls to the herd! Recently branded by ranch owner Dennis McDonald, these handsome boys have officially joined our resident bulls as they settle in.

For now, they're enjoying good feed, plenty of room to roam, and getting acquainted with their new pasture mates. Like the rest of the bulls, they're patiently waiting for the day they're turned out with the cows and can get to work helping shape the next generation of Open Spear Ranch genetics.

Life on the ranch is always moving forward, and we're proud to continue building a strong herd with quality cattle and careful stewardship.

Springtime at Open Spear Ranch means BABIES everywhere! 🐴🐮🪿

Not only is the ranch home to horses and cattle, but every year the Canadian Geese/Mallard ducks decide Open Spear Ranch is the perfect place to stop, nest, and raise their fluffy little goslings/ducklings. Watching the ponds come alive with tiny waddling families is just one more reminder of how special this season is.

Calving has officially come to a close, and foaling season is in full swing with many beautiful babies already on the ground. From playful calves and curious foals to fuzzy little goslings/ducklings, the ranch is full of new life, energy, and plenty of entertainment.

There’s nothing better than spring on the ranch and getting to enjoy this beautiful season of babies alongside the local wildlife. ❤️

🌿🐴 Springtime at Open Spear Ranch means one thing… foaling season is in full swing! 🐴🌿

We are excited to welcome two outstanding colts to the ranch this year—both grandsons of Metallic Cat and born from two of our National Cutting Horse Association money earners!

✨ A handsome bay out of Ms Sin City Kitty
✨ A striking sorrel out of Pici Kitty

These boys are already showing style, athleticism, and the kind of breeding we’re proud to stand behind. We can’t wait to watch them grow and develop over the summer.

📌 Both colts will be available for purchase after weaning on or about October 1st.

There’s never a dull moment at Open Spear Ranch 🤠

From fixing water tanks with our newest ranch hand, Huntir, the hangin' tree cowdog, who’s already proving his worth, to tagging calves and making our rounds checking on mares and their foals, every day brings a little grit and a lot of reward.

It’s the kind of life where hard work meets quiet moments, and the sunrises and sunsets remind you exactly why you chose it.

Wouldn’t trade it for anything. 🌅🐎🐄
