🐢😳 Imagine coming face-to-face with a turtle the size of a small car.

Meet Stupendemys geographicus—the largest freshwater turtle ever discovered.

Living between 13 and 5 million years ago, this prehistoric giant inhabited the ancient rivers of what is now Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and other parts of northern South America.

Some of its shells measured more than 2 meters (6.5 feet) long.

Unlike modern turtles that pull their heads straight back, Stupendemys belonged to a group known as side-necked turtles, folding its head sideways into its shell.

But its size wasn't the only extraordinary feature.

Scientists discovered that male Stupendemys had large horn-like projections on the front of their shells.

Fossils even show battle scars, suggesting these horns were used in fights against rival males.

A fossil skull described in 2021 also revealed that this giant turtle was likely a generalist feeder, eating a wide variety of plants and small animals.

It shared its world with giant prehistoric crocodilians and other enormous river creatures, making ancient South America one of the most remarkable ecosystems in Earth's history.

🦴 Millions of years later, its fossils continue to reveal new secrets about a lost world.
