The Arkansas Department of Agriculture confirmed a cattle death in Arkansas due to Theileria, a disease known to be transmitted by the Asian Longhorn Tick. While we've had the Asian Longhorn Tick in the state, this case in Boone County is the first confirmed case and death from Theileria.

A few important things to note about Theileria:
- There is no treatment for this disease, so prevention is key.
- The clinical signs are similar to anaplasmosis.
- It is non-zoonotic.
- We are entering prime tick and fly season - so creating an integrated pest management procedure is crucial.
- Chemical control can include back & side rubbers, ear tags, or pour-on.

2024’s calving season is almost in the books! We averaged almost 3 calves per day and the most we had in a single day was 10 calves. The bulls were busy boys!

Just a few more animals are due and then the nonselective grazing season will begin!

What a show! I can’t believe we were able to see the Northern Lights here at the ranch!

My drone’s low light capability wasn’t up to the task of capturing today’s eclipse unfortunately but here’s some arial shots of how the north side of the place is greening up this year.

Used it to check for new calves and it made it easy to find the calves that had been hidden by their dams as well.

Calves are starting to drop! This is a full blood Mashona heifer sired by our full blood bull, RR-17.

Two more are acting like they will begin calving at any moment. Eclipse and new calves, cool combo.

Calving should begin in earnest near the end of the week and the maternal lines are starting to congregate. This is a neat occurrence we have observed over several years. The two year old bred heifers will almost always be found hanging around their dams as they get closer to calving. We’ve witnessed 4 generations hanging out together and often heifers will calve within a short period of their dams.

This 2015 F1 Mashona X Beefmaster dam has a near constant shadow now with her coming two year old Mashona “secret sauce” composite daughter. They’re both bred to full blood Mashona bulls, a father and son combo in fact, so it will be interesting to watch this pair raise their calves together.

Had a load of dirt dropped off to fill some old wallows that have gotten out of hand, naturally the bulls and steers had to investigate it first.

Moved the girls onto some of the last of our stockpile today. Grazing at a much lighter stock density than usual this month since we are so close to calving.

By the time we’re done here, several of the previously grazed stockpiled paddocks should have reached enough maturity to graze again without the forage being washy or pulling young plants up from the soil. If not we’ll feed hay here for a bit as the lower section of this field could use the additional impact and nutrients that feeding hay will provide.

Sea-90 Ocean Minerals are here!

We heard your requests and have a few pallets of their garlic mineral salt on this load too.

We’ll be trying the garlic salt on our bull and heifer groups so that we can offer a honest opinion about it’s effectiveness in a few months.
