Midnight Haven Farm

Midnight Haven Farm We're a small farm in Western Arkansas. We raise registered LaMancha dairy goats & KuneKune pigs, have a budding D'Argent rabbitry, and hatch specialty chicks!

I love geese more than chickens, as it turns out. Ironically, they're so much QUIETER! But that's probably because we have a million roosters. 😂
I'd love to add more geese to the farm, but that will probably have to be a next year venture.
We're also heavily considering transitioning from our Kune Kune pigs to Gloucestershire Old Spots. The market will be more favorable for extras, the faster grow out time will mean that we overwinter fewer pigs, and they're a threatened heritage breed that we would love to offer. 😁
I've wanted to add them for a couple years, but it wasn't ever the right time. The other half is on board now and we will be on the lookout for at least a pair but probably a good trio of well bred, probably registered, GOS pigs. 🥳

Yes! People humanize animals WAY too much. They can develop relationships, they develop friendships, it's sweet to see, many have cute quirks and some are abnormally affectionate, but they are NOT the same as, more valued than, or as important as other humans. 🤷 They just aren't.
For those who say, "my animals come before most people!" You mean to tell me that if for some crazy reason you could choose to save either a random person or a loved animal, you'd honestly choose the animal? 😬
I 1,0000% would not. Id choose the person every time. I mean, I guess the only exception to that would be if it was a genuinely evil person, but even then it would probably haunt me.
And I've lost all of my animals before. Animals I've bred, helped deliver, bottle raised, prayed for, prayed over, and put blood, sweat, and tears into. Generally speaking, people are more important.

I value people over anything else. Meaning, people’s lives and safety are at the tip of my pyramid. Not bunnies. Not cows. Not fish. Not moles. Not any other animal.

If you think an animals life is worth the same or even more than your neighbor. More than the children. More than the elderly. YOU are the problem.

I have no problem defending people. No problem supporting people. No problem loving people. At the end of the day I will always choose people.

I don’t understand how violent people get over an animal. It’s food. It’s not worth you wishing harm on anyone. So foolish. So stupid. I think y’all need to up your med dose if you think a bunny is worth more than the people around you.

It's here. We've reached the point now.
We just don't even count our chickens anymore.
Do we have chickens?
Yes.
How many chickens?
That is an EXCELLENT question. I have no clue. Enough to step on and then apologize to like five different ones every time I do the chores and they hear me grab a bucket. That counts as an answer, right? 😂🤦

If you could pick for EVERY member of your herd to ✨magically✨ either have a buttery soft udder and all of their other existing traits OR every goat milks down to nothing and still has all of their currently existing traits, which would you choose? Which trait is more important to you, personally?
Nymph pictured below, lounging on the milk stand even though she's not even in milk and the jury is still out on if she's actually bred or not. 🤦

Well, the goats are grounded again. 🫠
They had an unauthorized visit with the very understanding neighbors who, thankfully, have a sturdy garden gate and fence. 🤦
So. Straight to jail. Again. It was nice while it lasted. 🫠
In other news, Nymph seems to just be well fed instead of bred since she's on day 153 with no udder development and no swelling of any kind back there.
Martha, on the other hand, is bred. Apparently she's just a quiet one in heat because she totally snuck it past me. I put Man O War in the main pen again "after breeding season", or so I thought. Nope. She's rocking a very cute little FF udder and we'll be having summer Midnight Haven kids... Again.... 🤦

Me, every now and then for no apparent reason: "Maybe I should get some really nice registered Nigerian Dwarf goats, too...."
Me, two seconds later: "No, no, nope, nuh-uh, I've got WAYYY too much on my plate already...."
Two seconds after that: "Buuuuut...." 👀
Repeat, forever probably. 🫠

We absolutely love MIgardener! They're truly awesome, real salt of the earth people. ❤️

I saw this in a garden group and it reminded me when people ask me, “Luke why do you think seed sales at MIgardener are at an all time high?”

This. This is why. Now in a free market system, this kind of pricing is allowed. It is welcomed in fact, because it allows the small business like ours to offer the same product, at nearly half the cost, and offer more seed at the same time, and it isn’t illegal at all for me to laugh in their face when they go out of business.

Greed in business only gets you so far. Passion, respect, and a code of ethics is required to be your North Star to success. Companies back in 2020 went nuts with price increases, they blamed “inflation”. Now they are blaming “fuel costs and fertilizer costs.” No. No, that’s greed. Because our costs have gone up slightly and yet in 2027 the price for our packets will be $2.20. A 10% increase for 6….SIX years of no price increases. They just woke up and said “hmmm a 150+ % increase seems like a good thing to take advantage of gardeners who are flocking to seeds to offset grocery prices. Our shareholders will love this, and after a month of complaining our customers will just be used to it because they are uninformed and like convenience.”

You have a choice where to buy seed. You have a choice to not pick it up, to laugh, and then save money elsewhere and grow a garden at a budget you choose. And we are happy to be your “elsewhere”. You can even save 20% right now sitewide making our $2 seeds, even cheaper.

This SNEAKY thing definitely has a nest stashed away somewhere that she's sitting on... 😑
We'll see what she comes back with in about three weeks. 🤦😂
At least the other broody hen has the decency to brood in the chicken coop... 🫠

Well, would you look at that. It's the milk stand dish I've been looking for for WEEKS. 🫠
Ive been using a galvanized metal bucket instead, precariously wedged into the spot the actual container fits into, much to the delight of my chickens. The goats inevitably get VERY excited and knock the bucket off, and that's when my entire flock of chickens rushes in. I have like 40ish chickens. It looks like a giant multicolored feathered carpet.
Not anymore! Scavengers. 😂 I swear, they talk about PIGS being always hungry. These dang chickens put them to shame. It doesn't matter if I've just given them their fees, fresh water, AND the scrap bucket. They still come running for goat food. 🤦
Anyways. Whoo! Found the dish!!
