Mindful Moment #12 – Shinrin-yoku

Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” is the Japanese practice of immersing oneself in the living presence of the forest. It is not simply a walk in the woods. It is an intentional slowing down, an engagement of all the senses, and a deepening of our connection to the natural world.

The redwoods at Big River Farm breathe this practice.

Light filters through the canopy. Fog moves between trunks. Rain drips steadily from needles, nourishing the forest floor where chantrelles emerge in winter and ferns soften the charred stumps left from logging decades ago. The Zendo trail begins at the orchard and winds toward the river, carrying with it layers of history from the 1960s Zen community who built small cabins among the roots.

Sometimes a walk in the forest becomes a journey through our own inner landscape.
Quiet. Dramatic. Healing. Unexpected.

This place continues to shape my art, my architecture, and my understanding of “Mindful Placemaking.”

May this moment offer you a breath of redwood air today.
