We’re just three weeks into building out our new café at the former Creamery location on 4th & Townsend — a dream opportunity to bring life back to this iconic corner. But the past 24 hours have been rough.

On Sunday, our back gate was smashed down. Police found two people inside the back condo space using he**in. We agreed to press charges, but to our shock, they were released shortly after. The next morning, we discovered we’d been robbed. Our newly purchased gear and equipment — gone. The break-in was targeted, and it feels hard not to connect the dots.

We’re feeling a mix of exhaustion and frustration, but we’re not giving up. The developer has stepped up with 24/7 security and a new security system, and we’ve met some incredible neighbors who want to help. Our goal isn’t just to open a café — we’re working with the developer to improve this entire block, including the old HD Buttercup warehouse and the vacant parking lot.

We believe in this project and this community. If you have ideas, resources, or just words of encouragement, we’d love to hear from you. It’s been a rough start, but we’re still here. 💪

The Coffee Lab, which opens at the end of April in Menlo Park, is definitely not a coffee shop. Instead, its owners want you to focus more on the experience of brewing and tasting coffee, hoping to teach you enough to take your own home coffee practices to the next level.
