We've gained quite a few new followers lately and hit the 5k mark!

Here's a mini reintroduction of us:

My grandparents, Daymon and Lois, have been working with horses for awhile (50+ years), but got into breeding quarter horses around 30 years ago. Their inspiration horses? Royal Blue Boon and Shining Spark -- they even got to meet them.

My parents are not the ranching type, but I, Crystal, was at the ranch every chance that I could be. When I started dating Carter in 2019, my childhood dream of taking over the ranch quickly became a real possibility. Carter came from a large farm and ranch in SD and had been at UMary studying mechanical engineering.

When Papa Daymon developed prostate cancer in 2020, my now husband, Carter Trefz, stepped up to the plate, and we started to take over the spring of 2021.

So what have we been up to over the past 5 years? Mostly working and praying. All four of us work to make this ranch happen all day, every day, 365.

As the 6th generation to take over this ranch, we hold onto our roots and also continue to grow. We are working to AI to some of the top stallions in the industry while also bringing in some of the top black angus bloodlines into our cattle herd.

Fun fact: Daymon and Lois once owned a daughter of Mr Gun Smoke

I thought I'd give an update as to what has been going on with our new stallion search and what led to this occurring.

Shiver N Shine Two (Sparky) rapidly developed tumors on his sheath this spring that would break open and bleed when he attempted to breed mares. We had the tumors removed and sent off for testing. We also had the mares checked that we had put in with him, and he had successfully settled one of them, even with the bleeding that started to occur.

We looked at several potential stallions but ended up not moving forward with any of them. This was due to a good friend allowing us to lease their stallion for the season, and for the fact that now that the spots are healed, Sparky is back to being able to breed (for now).

The test results came back and confirmed the tumors were cancerous and a quick growing cancer that has most likely metastasized already.

Sparky is his happy, easy-going self yet and is with mares (that he loves dearly -- he has favorites lol), and we will make the best decision for him in a few months. But for now, we will make the most of the summer!

Sparky is 6 panel negative, EJSCA negative, has produced over 100 foals, and has two actively showing in AQHA. His foals are known for their bone and brains. If you wanted a Sparky foal, you won't get many more opportunities.

He is sired by Shake Shiver N Shine an own son of Shining Spark and earner of $5,564 and 217.5 AQHA Open Performance Points. Shake Shiver N Shine earned AQHA Performance ROM and was an AQHA World Qualifier in senior heeling, tie down roping, and junior team roping. On the bottom side he is Jessie Tivio bred.
