Thinning! One of the most important yet tedious jobs we do over the summer. Thinning apples is the process of removing excess young fruitlets. This practice helps to direct the tree's energy into the remaining fruit, resulting in larger, higher quality apples. It is also immensely important for next year's crop. Apple trees set their flower buds for next year's crop during the mid-to-late summer of the current year. Because the tree has to support growing fruit while simultaneously trying to build flower buds for the next season, it requires immense energy. If the trees have to heavy of a crop, this will take away from the energy the tree needs for the following year. If not enough energy is stored the trees will produce little or no fruit the following year.

The word “succulent” comes from the Latin “sucus,” which means sap. This is because their leaves are filled with a nutrient-rich sap, which is why these plants do not need much water and can be fertilized less than other plants!

Our greenhouse is open daily 9-5 with succulents and more!

Genovese basil is 10% off June 3rd- June 12th! Time to make pesto!

To make a vibrant and classic Basil Pesto, you only need 5 minutes and a few fresh ingredients!

Basic Basil Pesto:
½ cup toasted pine nuts
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 small garlic clove
¼ teaspoon salt
ground black pepper to taste
2 cups basil leaves
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for a smoother pesto
¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Instructions:
In a food processor, combine the pine nuts, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper and pulse until well chopped.

Add the basil and pulse until combined.

With the food processor running, drizzle in the olive oil and pulse until combined. Add the Parmesan cheese, if using, and pulse to briefly combine. For a smoother pesto, add more olive oil.

For longer storage, freeze it in ice cube trays, then transfer the frozen cubes to an airtight freezer bag.

Winter hardy hibiscus brings a tropical island flair to Wisconsin! Unlike tropical varieties they can and should be planted outside and left there all year so that they go dormant. They will regrow from the roots and we recommend waiting until spring to cut back the old growth. When spring comes around, be patient! Hardy hibiscus are notorious for breaking dormancy late. They often will not start showing new growth until late May or early June. At that time they will grow rapidly and produce massive, 8- to 12-inch blooms from mid-summer through early fall. We grow 5 different colors!

Our greenhouse is open daily from 9-5 through June 21st!
Once we close at the farm we will still be bringing plants (including hibiscus!) to the Richfield WI Farmers Market on Saturdays from 10-1! Please note, the market is closed on June 20th and July 4th.

'Blazing Sunset' Geum is a standout, award-winning perennial. The flowers are a gorgeous scarlet-red that resemble miniature roses. The sturdy, wiry stems make them excellent, long-lasting cut flowers for indoor arrangements. The plant grows 18 to 24 inches tall and are both low-maintenance and deer-resistant. But the best part about this plant is that it blooms continuously from late spring through late summer!

Our greenhouse is open daily 9-5!
We will also have a large variety of plants (including Geum) at the Richfield WI Farmers Market this Saturday from 10-1! Hope to see you there!
