SOUTH TEXAS BUILDERS ASSOCIATION HAS BEEN RAISING THE ALARM. AND THE NUMBERS ARE NOW SPEAKING FOR THEMSELVES.
Today, CEO Mario Eden Guerrero spoke to Univision regarding this topic, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and its impact on South Texas families and the construction industry.
For months, we have been speaking out about this issue because we are committed to protecting an industry that thousands of South Texas families depend on.
Now we are seeing the impact.
๐ Construction jobs in the Rio Grande Valley reportedly fell approximately 5% in a single quarter the largest quarterly decline on record for our region.
๐ Across Texas, industry reports also show a persistent construction labor shortage of more than 60,000 workers statewide, putting pressure on timelines, budgets, and housing supply.
๐ Research has projected that under a large-scale deportation scenario, Texas could see construction employment fall by as much as 32%, with some estimates warning of double-digit increases in project delays and housing costs within the first year alone.
๐ The National Association of Home Builders has also reported that labor shortages already add thousands of dollars to the cost of building a single home, with some markets seeing cost increases of 10โ20% tied directly to workforce constraints.
We have been clear from the beginning: You cannot remove a major part of the construction workforce without consequences.
When we lose workers, projects slow down.
When projects slow down, costs go up.
When costs go up, HOME PRICES GO UP.
And ultimately, Texas families pay the price.
We support securing our border and removing dangerous criminals. But we also need REAL immigration reform that provides a legal pathway for hardworking people who are contributing to our economy every day.
This is not about Republican or Democrat.
This is about protecting our builders, our workforce, our economy, and the future of housing in South Texas.
We will continue speaking up because we see what is happening to our industry and we refuse to stay silent while it happens.
SECURE THE BORDER. FIX THE SYSTEM. PROTECT OUR WORKFORCE.
KEEP SOUTH TEXAS BUILDING. ๐บ๐ธ๐๏ธ
