Been a very wet summer here. So we got a bit behind on hay. Weather finally showed a break so this weeks been a bit of a blur. I am 90% sure any grey hairs I have are from trying to watch weather windows and deciding if, how much, and what location to cut hay. Each field has a diff ability to shed water after rain, so needing to cut as quick as possible after the last rain but not rutting up fields is just the start, as well as access to sun and wind, type of grass, clover, alfalfa, that’s in it, they all have diff dry down times, this late in the year we like to have an extra day as well with the heavy dews, less hot sun, and shorter days.

we have put down about a houndred acres of 2nd and 3rd cut in the last 6 days. And 80 of those in the last 3 days, so this weekend is not going to feel much like a weekend hah… but that’s farming life I suppose. Just blessed the weather window worked out over the weekend, so it minimizes the amount of time I have to take off work. Thankful for an understanding boss as well who lets me take a few half days to help get things rolled up before the dew rolls in hopefully.

Had a few minor break downs and interuptions. But so far nothing we can’t work around…. Ended up cutting past mid night the one night. trying to beat a rain window.

Now today is move equipment every where and do a bunch of tedding….

But the sun is shinning and so far the weatherman still says no rain!

It’s a rain week so we are finally getting away from hay and back to some of the neglected farm fixing chores. the temps have backed down a lil as well. It’s hard to motivate your self to jump into more tasks when you get home after being drenched in sweat from 730am each day.

the wife’s family barn was built with some mis understanding between design and practical usage. So the posts are to close together to use standard metal gates. For the last 15 years they have just had to build, rebuild, re rebuild wood gates for all the feed bunks. But drafts have a way of totally jacking up any possible thing.

So now with young kids, time is not as easy to find just to rebuild a new wood gate every now and again, We have been wanting to convert to heavy duty bull gates for a while, not that our horses can’t still break them too but it’s not nearly as often, the wife was on market place and found a cow guy selling his herd and had a massive pile of lightly used not very old bull gates for less then half price, so we jumped on it. Now with a pile of metal gates and all of the wooden gates busted or being held together by ropes from a really tough spring usage, and no horses in those fields at the moment it’s time to suck it up and cut down some gates re weld them the right length, then start trying To get the barn back together before we start weaning foals maybe next week!

My two lil helpers showed up after chores tonight, and were quick to grab a hammer and screw driver to lend a few extra hands. They took a quick step back when it was cut off saw time, a bit scared of the sparks but Elwynn quickly came back to run the sawzall with me.

It’s going fairly easier then I was expecting, but I have also not hung any of the new ones back up yet, so I am going to try and hold my final verdict.

sorry dropped off the posting world for a while. just kinda been running like crazy doing square bales in the 90 degree weather after work, not to mention fixing broken stuff, fertilizing, all the holiday family crazy, and I left my camera in the big tractor at the hay for for a few weeks. so just kinda you know been living…. but I found the camera and it’s been a lil wetter this week, so kinda been getting back into the swing of things again.

we move some horses around tonight after work, got to spend some time with the foals, man they really grow fast when you don’t see them for a while!

sore, exhausted, and tired!

Not quite sure if it’s that I cut my 100th acre of hay in the last 8 days today all on far from air ride old tractor seats.

OR it might have something to do with this… today I took a half day from work because we had so much hay to bale today, but as I was leaving work at noon my wife called saying some one needed a shipment of semen on a stallion, could I run home before going to the field to rake.

We have it pretty well streamlined these days so fig it would not interfere with timing enough to say no. heres where the afternoon takes a very unexpected and rather interesting turn…

As I was walking him back to the stallion field I pass my sister-in-law and dad staring up at a tree with all sorts of bizarre contraptions laying around. She goes there is a swarm of bees up on that branch waaayyy up there! I took a quick gander as I listened to a plethora of a bit far fetched but possible scheme’s . Now it kinda looked like one you chalk up to well sure it would be nice but some things just are not going to happen. So I walk the stud home and come back past with Full intent to go rake hay. But I could just tell they were about to try some less then successful looking idea that would take them far to long.

so when I am short or behind on time I can get a bit ahh hyper focused/directest path to task completion. So I take another quick look and said meh I will just climb her knock it into a bucket and lower it on a string. Seems pretty simple and fast. I have captured a few swarms before, mostly sting free and fairly un eventful.

Now this might be where my lack of time really kinda dug it’s lil claws in a bit and had me just scamper up the tree with out a whole lot of, once said bees are in bucket maybe you should be a bit more prepared for potential consequences… as i quickly bat down my sister inlaws offer for a bee hat and gloves, as i am already 10’ up the tree, having spent enough time climbing in trees I wanted nothing extra to get me caught or interfere with my movements….

I will preface this decision with, over my life I have been stung by about every flying thing that goes buzz i have come across, some once some a bunch of times together. So I knew I was not allergic and honestly get very mild reactions to them. So fig it’s really no big deal If a few bees get upset.

After a rather expected fairly brisk ascent I was quietly perched out on a branch a lil bit sketchily but well in my personal realm of comfort. Now as I lay flat out on this small branch with one hand holding a bucket under the swarm 6” in front of my face as I am resting glancing with my chest on the branch as I hold on with my legs. that’s the exact point at which the first shred of hmmm is this actually a good idea crosses my mind. but let’s be honest I had things to do and was in No mood to not succeed.

So the first un foreseen hurdle was when gazing up from rather far below it looked like a small pile of bees. But NOW! Mear inches away with a bucket kinda awkwardly held under the rather real faces of hundreds maybe thousands of moving buzzing bees, it was at least twice as wide as the 5 gal bucket mouth. i Knew i had better get the queen in the bucket or I absolutely did not want to be up in the tree. so as I kinda balanced on my chest I used my other hand to start ahh well pushing, just straight up high fiving a very dense very heavy pile of bees as I scraped the bottom of the branch from me away from my chin with the bucket.

This is where the world all of a sudden sped up and slowed down at the exact same time! It was almost an Out of body experience. As I watched each angry bee face turn and stare right at me in slow motion, I also in very real time remember feeling more pin pricks than you could comprehend in instant succession All around my hair line… My vision seemed slow motion but my right hand was moving in warp speed, I swatted a few times then smacked the branch real hard and thought I saw a golf ball size cluster still holding on the underside. so I just palm it and push it right down in the bucket.

at that exact moment I realized the error of my haste. Task was complete! My brain said ok time to move to the next pressing matter. Oddly enough though raking hay was NOT front and center. time all of a sudden returned to reality and first task was lower bucket to ground instantly. Fallowed by ahhhh! cant Fail now don’t just drop it… as soon as it was on the ground instincts instantly took over. I was descending the tree purely by feel and mostly with My legs as I was frantically swatting my head and arms. I am not sure which i Was more running from, the over whelming sensation of stings or the deafening sound of buzzing of untold amounts of furious buzzing lunatics stuck crawling through my messy hair knowing each one was undoubtedly going to find its mark…

Now as the video will show the instant I hit the ground in a bit overly dramatic kinda cartoonish even motion, I rather frantically darted from the vicinity, Down the lane across the road and ended up with my head upside down rather awkwardly perched in a stream for how long I do not know. It felt as though I had just been wearing a crown of stinging bees. And the best option was drowning them. Plus the cold water felt amazing.

with The world a bit upside down as I kinda head stranded in the stream, my first thoughts were hmm I wonder if this will make my soreness go away! Bee stings are supposed to be used to fight joint pain and bring healing… 2nd was to ponder if maybe it will make my hair grow super fast for a while! my Sister in law eventually tracked me down and helped me pick loads of stingers out of my hands arms and head. As well as pluck ohh so many bees of verying lifelessness out of my wet hair….

never fear I decided it prob best practice to hang around for a short time till I saw one of the stings on my arm go down drastically, though I have had a few stings before I thought it best to not get to far from people with what I am guessing to be well over. 50+ stings mostly on my head and hands. But it was fairly Quick short lived excitement and I was off down the rd to rake bale and eventually cut my 100th acre of hay in 8 days before dark…

As I lay on the couch huddled in my coat kinda shaking at Midnight I am really not sure if it’s from hunger, sunburn, bee stings, or way to many hrs bouncing around a tractor seat. But I am ready for what ever tomorrow brings! Be it a bit more boring or some how even more thrilling than today’s chance escapades…

it was a odd day on the hay farm today, we live in western pa, land of rain. every other year of my life you look at the weather and basically flip a coin then go cut and hope you can squeak out a dry 3 days.
But today we have been in such a long dry spell that I started the day by raking hay, then tedded some other hay I cut yesterday, then square and round baled the raked hay, THEN hooked up the mower and cut down some more hay….

I can’t tell you how many times I check the weather fully expecting them to have added rain in out of no where. But so far another 6 days with 0% chance of rain… norm we are cutting with days in the 30% chance range and just praying for nothing.

Kids are growing and learning the ropes, learning which order and what equipment we use when and what it does, as well as feeling the hay and knowing when to bale,

Rains gone, suns out! That means it’s hay season!

Picked our highest field and started laying it down tonight after work, tires were dry when cutting so that’s a good sign the field wont get rutted up and the hay should dry down.

We have been trying to get every thing ready the last week or so, most of the equipment is in good working order, still need to haul some equipment to the right farms and clean up the barns so they are ready to store hay, but we have 3 days hah…. Oh hay season how I love you and get exhausted by you The same….

wet Would be an understatement. But the kids don’t seem to mind so much, lots of running around splashing in the muddy muck! Farm kids build great immune systems… and today was just one of those days, the youngest took several full body faceplants in 3” of straight p**p mud. Never slowed down! All smiles and even took some time out to cuddle the horses, nothing gets between this kid and his horse snuggles.…

But with the constant rain I finally managed to get a coat rack built for our mud room, I kinda forgot how much I enjoy wood working, I used to just spend all my free time woodworking, its Been years since I had free time though, so kinda forgot how much fun it is!

Just that time of year! hard enough to keep life in order with breeding, foaling, hay equipment prep, day job, let alone family time. So finding time to post has been a bit lax,

We had our last foal of the season over the weekend, so that’s one huge sleep stealer and time consumer out of the way. We are a few short weeks away from hopefully having the most busy farm time out of the way.(foaling and re breeding) Then it’s on to the ever crazy but a bit more localized hay season!

But today was cousin day, told the kids I would spend the day with them with out doing any house of farm work. the weather was near perfect so we went down the rd and found the cousins, lots of fun was had by all. I do love warm weather on the farm!

tired about sums it up. We have just been running a lil ragged here the last two days, a mare foaled out two nights ago, all went well a super cute lil gypsy filly. What a fun lil thing! Spitting image of her mom. Every thing went pretty smooth.

Then the next morning we had a mare start foaling but nothing looked right, no feet at all! So I called in late to work and did a quick run over to the vet hospital. The foal was upside down backwards with no feet back. So the options were put the mare down or try a c section… it’s not cheap or a guarantee, but things looked ok, so we said go for it, off I headed back to the day of work, got a text after lunch that both mare and new foal survived the c section and seemed to be doing ok. A true blessing for sure on that one.

Fallowed up by another mare popping out her foal in the middle of the night last night, so two short nights in a row with to much todo between, it made for alot of yawns at work today. But blessed to have an active job so easy enough to stay awake.

Myrtle gave us a beautiful filly last night, all and all a pretty easy foaling, no real struggles but it’s still a lot of awake standing around watching and small nudges to help with standing and nursing. So sleep should come easy tonight! No more mares look like they will go tonight so should give us a full nights sleep….

The lil kiddos came out to check on the new foal in the morning, pajamas and boots is farmers go to!

I ended up getting that massive burl milled down Sunday afternoon, it took a lot longer than I had expected. the milling part was not so bad, I decided on just doing cookie cuts, I made them 2.75” thick. In hopes that once they dry and I plane them down I should be at or above 2” thick Finished slabs. ( such heavy cookies though. it was all I could do just rolling them and sliding them to get them off the mill. I ended up having to have a friend over the next day to pick them up and actually stack them) But cookies are notoriously bad at splitting and warping so I ended up getting some sealant paint from a local sawmill friend, hopefully to help control it as much as possible. So after each cut I was painting on both sides. Easily took longer to do that then the milling.
The kids woke up from their naps and I was still down milling so of course they wanted to help too! More hands don’t always speed up the process, but it’s far more enjoyable keeping them involved.

it sure was a fun project! So much beautiful wood. I used to spend all my free time wood working and crafting. it’s So enjoyable to open up a log, each one is special and has its own one Of a kind grain, each chunk Of wood was also only limited by your tools and imagination.
