So, today I went to help a friend shear her llama. What an adventure! Said llama has not been handled much in her life, apparently, and had no plans of letting today be any different! Thank goodness for a neighbor who has had experience handling llamas or else said llama would likely still be sporting two, three, or maybe even more, years of fiber growth on her. Neither Teena (llama’s owner) nor I knew that the neighbor had actually sheared a llama before, and she actually ended up doing the lion’s share, but I did get in there and do a bit of it. Most of the time “Queenie” insisted on lying on the ground during her ordeal, and the neighbor lady said that was how she had always done her llamas, so we went with that! Not my idea of an ideal shearing position, but Queenie didn’t really give us any choice in the matter! It took three of us to get it done, and it wasn’t a pro job by any stretch, but I think Queenie will be a lot more comfortable now. And, by the way, I knew llamas could spit...I had no idea they could spit so much!

Lots of crying babies, featuring “Gizmo” who was born to Flame on Saturday. One ewe left who hasn’t lambed. One of us thinks she’s not bred and one of us hasn’t given up hope yet!

Estelle had a moorit gray ram lamb sometime today. Erik didn’t see any lambs this morning and I was busy in the garden all day so didn’t make it out to check the flock until after supper. At first I thought it was just one of the other lambs standing near her, but then I saw the lamb I thought it was, counted all the rest and realized it must be hers! We are calling him “Graybeard” because of his very pronounced sugar lips. I love this sugar lips!

This morning Bangles had two black lambs. The ewe lamb is Giggle and the ram is Gaggle. I was hoping she’d have a ram with eye spots like hers so we could call him “Goggles” but I’m very happy with these very black lambs. Gaggle has quite a bit of flashing on his head, but neither one seems to have sugar lips, so I’m thinking solid black rather than black gray.

Very pretty, nice, big ram lamb born last night to Elayne. Elayne is our least friendly sheep, so she was extremely nervous having us even as far away as the other side of the fence. We did not try to get a good look last night, just left her be with her new baby. I went out this morning and she had brought him into the barn. These don’t show just how pretty he is as it was a little dark in the barn. Hopefully I will get some better shots of him in a few days, when he starts bouncing around and running with the other lambs. Interestingly, he looks almost identical to the ewe lamb Elayne had two years ago, Flash, who is also not very friendly. Still working on a name for this little fella. I think G is the hardest letter, yet!

Another set of ewe lambs born this morning, this time to F***y (Fandangle) who is a first time momma. She’s doing well with her babies and will stomp at us if we get too close. I hope this easy lambing continues through the whole flock! I like going out and finding healthy lambs already up and feeding! I think the one on the left is going to be Ginger. We haven’t yet picked a name for the one on the ground with the darker eye patches.

Our first lambs in two years were born last night just before sundown. Two healthy ewe lambs born to Dahlia. The moorit solid is Gloria and the moorit mouflon is Gardenia. Dahlia is extremely protective and even charged/ butted me last night when I picked one up. I’ve never had a ewe do that before...it really took me by surprise! She even came at me a second time, after I had put the lamb down. Needless to say, we are being very respectful of her space. But her lambs are so friendly (also unusual) that it is hard to resist touching them. The second one came over to me after the camera was off and I did manage to sneak a little pet! Hopefully Momma will grow less aggressive about them before they get over their friendliness!

Picked the first beans of the season. Not quite enough to can, yet, but it’s a start! They were really yummy to snack on just raw.

Wow! We have had lambs popping out all over today! 5 new lambs born in less than 24 hours. A single last night around 9, and two sets of twins born just this afternoon within an hour of each other. One first time mama was not quite getting the concept of letting her lambs nurse, although she was being very attentive to them otherwise. We brought them into the barn, secured mama's head and let her see that she was supposed to let her lambs under her, made sure they both got a good long drink of milk and have left them to settle in. The other ewe, a seasoned pro, is doing fine with her new babies. All deliveries went without incident, thank goodness. I will try to get pictures later, after everyone has some recovery time. One more ewe to go. If she doesn't drag her feet too much, this will be the fastest lambing season ever!

Here is the second video I took earlier today of our new lambs. Facebook will only allow one at a time, and in the middle of posting, I was called out to the pasture because one of the ewes is in active labor. I came in to give her some time and will check on her in a bit. I can see feet, so here’s hoping, when I go back out, there will be a healthy lamb on the ground. In the meantime, enjoy these other videos!

Lambing has begun. It has been a very strange season so far. Lots of backwards, tangled up lambs. Some we’ve been able to successfully bring into the world, others not. We’ve had to help a lot more than usual, even with experienced mothers. But, we do have some adorable, healthy lambs so far.

For Christmas, Erik had this rack of shelves built for me to store my home canned goods on. He traded some of this year’s hay to a local Amish man who builds furniture. I am just thrilled with it. Merry Christmas everyone!
