The biggest challenge to farming is putting all your heart and soul into the crops and then unexpectedly the crops develop not to their potential. The first cucumbers I had planted have produced nicely but with all the rain, they are feeling stressed. We can tell by the bottle neck cucumber, (not enough potassium in the soil,) and the burnout at the end of the cucumber in front of the bottle neck, (not enough nitrogen). We add nitrogen to the soil with grass clippings and potassium from potash from our wood burning stove. Nature gives us everything we need to give back. The balance can be restored. Don’t forget about our farm festival where you can learn all about these tricks of the trade!

The last few summers have been a challenge because of the lack of rain but this summer has been wonderful! The wells are full of water and the crops have gotten a few good soaks throughout June and July. I have been enjoying tomato sandwiches everyday for a week so far and I haven't tired of how juicy our tomatoes are! Tomatoes love this hot weather and are producing nicely. The blackberries are plentiful and happy. However, it is always a balance between the crops that like hot weather and those that don't. The kale does not like this heat but we have planted collard greens that can handle it until it gets cooler. Both kale and collard greens (as well as lettuce) perfer the cooler weather which we will see come September. Speaking of September, make sure you keep an eye out for our farm festival event. It always happens in September and if we are blessed with beautiful weather, it is always well attended! Until then, if you would like to take in our beautiful farm, Katie offers Saturday morning yoga on the farm (see the attachment for further details)

While July is known for celebrating independence, I want to acknowledge interdependence. The definition is "the dependence of two or more people or things relying on each other" and while some people many cringe at the thought of having to rely on someone else (weren't we all taught to be independent and self-sufficient after all?), in reality we all depend on others for even our most basic everyday needs. Those yummy blueberries you are eating need another variety of blueberry to cross pollinate before they can produce berries. To extend your blueberry patch you would dig up a shoot from another bush and transplant it. The farmer has a close personal relationship with the plants he is growing. The tools we use in the fields to the gas we put in our farm equipment, we depend on other people to refine and make the product so our farm can run smoothly. We rely on each other. I hope this letter encourages you to look around at someone delivering your oil, propane, or food, and feel the connection you have with them and say. "Thank you."

The days are longer, the flowers are growing and you are receiving your first letter from Sweet Birch Farm— all signs of spring! Even though the weather has been on the cool side, I can see the hope of warm weather throughout the farm. We have the lettuce and kale planted and growing nicely. The dandelions, hyacinths, and daffodils are growing. These early flowers provide food for the bees. One of the hives was so overpopulated that it had to be separated since they were about ready to swarm.
Next week, Saturday, Katie is going to start her weekly yoga class at the farm from 9:30-10:30. Alina has her soaps and skincare products available to sell. We are also in talks with Katie about offering a soap making class after one of her wonderful yoga classes in June (perhaps the 13th). See below for details!
