Heritage Berries

Heritage Berries Come join us as we restart the tradition of our grandparents who were passionate about growing the juiciest, most flavorful strawberries. U-pick and Pre-picked.

Located in Merrill, where the air is crisp and the soil is rich. We are at Grampa’s Farm! We're giving strawberries a go. Our grandparents both grew berries! Come make some summer memories at Grampa's Farm.

The Crockfords operate Heritage Berries, which is a U-pick strawberry field associated with the Grampa's Farm agritourism venue. There are 7 acres of berries planted. The farm grows 8 acres of pumpkins, approximately 1 acre of flowers, and sunflowers for the fall event. More details to come. This grower-focused field day will highlight using application drones, mechanical cultivation (Tilmor, Eco-w**der), beginner strawberry production, irrigation, soil ammendments for small fruit, agritourism.

Live spray drone demonstration (weather permitting) and discussion of how drone technology can fit into berry and vegetable production, including application considerations and current regulations.

Strawberry field tour of recently renovated strawberry plantings and discuss establishment, renovation, fertility, and variety performance. The farm has approximately 7 acres of strawberries and nine June-bearing varieties: Annapolis, Wendy, Flavorfest, Jewel, Galletta, Honeoye, Brunswick, Cavendish, Dickens, and Darselect.

Demonstration of a Tilmor electric cultivation tractor, with discussion of mechanical w**d control, labor savings, and applications for berry and vegetable farms. Cliff Rowe from Berry Hill Farm, Anoka, Minnesota, representing Tilmor equipment (dealer), will also be present to discuss cultivation equipment options for small diversified farms. Cliff and Amy Rowe grow over 10 acres of berries and are early adopters of the electric tractor cultivation.

Pumpkin w**d-control strategies in pumpkins, including herbicide and mechanical cultivation. See the farm’s recently acquired Eco-Weeder and discuss what is and is not working in current programs.

Discuss recent acquired irrigation pipe for frost-protection, and the challenging decisions on developing water resources.

Small fruit soil fertility for establishment, soil testing, pH management, nutrient amendments, and site preparation for raspberries and blueberries.

Finally a look at the Crockfords’ agritourism operation, including the pumpkin patch, hayrides, mobile petting zoo, flowers, sunflowers, and fall attractions.

July 7, 2026 - Today was the last day of pre-picked for the season. Sold out. We’ve really enjoyed getting know the strawberry fans out there. We appreciated the compliments and encouragement, it’s not easy learning a new crop, investing everything back into growing a new enterprise, and you know, unpredictable weather. It was a better season for us. Despite Hwy 17 being closed practically next to the farm, many came the long way! We met a lot of people actually who learned about us from extra road signs! We’re now shifting to field renovations, items on the improvement list. Planning on keeping our seven acres next year. We can definitely serve more customers with u-pick so tell a friend we got berries, plenty to go around.

July 6, 2026 - UPDATE After walking tonight, we just don’t have enough berries left to open again for u-pick.

U-pick will pause while berries ripen, pre-pick will continue as we clean up some rows. We hope to have some U-pick Tuesday evening. We are now picking the last two varieties.

Soon we start prepping the field for next year. If we keep all the current strawberries, we will have around 7 acres. We do a lot of picking, so we will have room for more u-pick and continue pre-pick. Let your friends know about us!
