Honey from sealed Egyptian tombs has survived more than 3,000 years intact, protected by a triple defense: near-zero water content, an acidic pH around 4, and hydrogen peroxide generated by a bee enzyme called glucose oxidase. Together they create conditions where almost nothing biological can grow.

So in cold weather honey bees cluster to generate heat and protect the colony. One of my friends was able to get a great video of his bees clustering in the last night cold temps. You can see a tight ball formed by the bees where they can keep the center very warm to protect the queen, eggs and larva in the harsh temps.

Here are 6 queens that I placed in hives last week. If you turn up your volume you can here the Queens piping. When Queens pipe it is a show of them wanting to fight for dominance in the hive. They also do this piping sound to locate other virgin Queens to eliminate them before they can hatch. Fear not each queen went into their own hive and are now happily residing with all their other bees.

The bees marching into their new hive following the swarm catch. This confirms that the queen is in the hive when you see all the other bees matching in.

The girls are a little hot today. So what you see on this hive is called bearding. When it's to warm in the hive bees go sit out on the front porch basically to help control the temp in the hive.
