Soon the goats will spend their days foraging on green leaves and fresh plants, but for now they have to settle for spruce boughs. Spring growth is so close we can almost taste it! 🌱

GOATS 101 - April 25th

Are you interested in owning goats? Do you have goats and want to troubleshoot problems or learn more about your caprine companions? Do you just love goats and want to hang out with them for a day? Then this class is for you!

Sweet Fern Farm will be hosting this 6-hour class all about goats. The instructors (Heather and Sara) have many years of experience caring for all types of goats in different situations.

Heather has a herd of dairy goats and experience with breeding and milking. Sara is a veterinary technician and the director of Peace Gate Farm Sanctuary. She has rescued and rehabilitated dozens of goats, and keeps a herd of over 20 goats of all breeds at the Sanctuary.

Heather and Sara will provide hands-on learning of basic goat care, including housing, fencing, feeding, healthcare, and herd management.

The goatherds here at Sweet Fern Farm will be demonstrating how we use our goats to manage invasive species!

It’s going to be a fun day full of learning and goats! The cost is a suggested $50 donation to Peace Gate Farm Sanctuary, a 501C3 nonprofit.

Meet Temple! She’s the youngest of our herd, born just two hours after Taco & Tulip. Temple is a sweet angel with a lot of personality and a photogenic smile. She’s very intelligent—if anyone figures out how to open the gate, it will be her! Temple is an only child and isn’t afraid to do her own thing away from the rest of the herd. I think she sometimes gets overwhelmed by the rambunctiousness of the other kids!

Temple belongs to our friend Heather, who named her after Dr. Temple Grandin. Temple will return to Heather’s farm later this year, but we get to enjoy her company in the meantime!

Meet Taco and Tuliptree! (Tulip is smaller and has more white on her face). Taco is a sweet boy with the personality of a golden doodle. He’s all love and happiness and he enjoys attention from humans, although Mark is definitely his favorite person. Tulip is the queen of our small herd and isn’t afraid to boss the others around. She’s pretty independent, but she and Taco still cuddle most nights.

These two were the first goats we welcomed to our farm, along with their mama Roo (who is currently at a friend’s farm). We even got to be there when they were born, which was a magical experience!

Meet Tater and Trillium! These twins are the oldest of our kids by five days. Tater (black legs) is an outgoing boy with a taste for mischief—he will nibble on any piece of loose clothing he can! Trilly, on the other hand, is quiet and reserved. She’s inseparable from her brother and they sleep together every night ā¤ļø

Hi everyone, we’re back! The last two years have been a rollercoaster but our farm has brought us so much joy and I want to share that joy with all of you!

Our goats all turn 1 year old this week and I’ll be doing an intro post for each one so you can get to know the herd! In the meantime, please enjoy this video where we managed to get all five in party hats at the same time.
