Yesterday was HOT. I was tired, sunburned, and honestly running on fumes by the end of the day.
At one point, a gentleman came to the booth, filled up a bag with mangoes, and when I told him the total was about $60, he looked at me and said, “I’m not paying $60 for these mangoes,” and walked away.
What struck me wasn’t that he didn’t buy. Not every product is for every customer, and that’s okay.
What struck me was what happened next.
Several customers standing nearby looked at me and said, “We understand. We respect your business.”
And that meant more than they probably realized.
Sometimes people see a mango and only see the price tag. They don’t see the years it took to grow that tree. They don’t see the water bill, the fertilizer, the gas, the equipment, the property taxes, the labor, the losses from bad weather, or the months when you’re spending money long before you sell a single piece of fruit.
This year has been especially challenging for mango growers. Production was down, fruit was limited, and costs certainly didn’t go down.
The funny thing is, every one of those mangoes sold anyway. I didn’t take any home.
Yesterday reminded me that the right customers understand value. They understand that when they support a local farm, they’re supporting a dream, a family, a business, and years of hard work.
I share this not to complain, but to offer a little perspective. We know everyone has different budgets and priorities, and we genuinely appreciate every person who stops by our booth. But for those who choose to support local farms, please know that your purchase means so much more than a transaction. It helps keep small farms going and allows us to continue doing what we love.
To everyone who stopped by, bought fruit, shared a kind word, or simply encouraged us—thank you.
You make the long, hot days worth it. 🥭❤️
