Placekeeping as Practice in Changing Communities
Oct. 13 | 4:00 to 6:00 PM | Escorial/Alhambra
A hands-on workshop on placekeeping, an approach that protects a community's culture, memory, and identity as it grows. Participants will leave with practical steps they can use regardless of budget or authority. With Desiree' Powell of Do Right By The Streets, Dr. Rebecca Friedman and Dr. Aarti Mehta-Kroll of Florida International University, and Fatima Elkott of Conscious Community Connectors.

The Little Havana Me Importa Plan at 10 Years

In 2016, thousands of residents helped shape a plan for Little Havana's future, through a partnership between the Health Foundation of South Florida, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Plusurbia, Dade Heritage Trust, Live Healthy Little Havana, and other nonprofits. This panel looks at what has been carried forward and what comes next. With City of Miami Commissioners Rolando Escalona and Ralph "Rafael" Rosado, Raissa Fernandez, and Jorge Damian de la Paz of the Miami-Dade County Mayor's Office.

Housing challenges rarely have a single owner. One partner may hold the land, another the financing, another the approvals knowledge, the data, or the community relationships. That idea stayed with us after Building Thriving Communities: A Canada-U.S. Exchange on Housing & Urban Innovation, where Maria Bendfeldt represented Plusurbia alongside industry leaders and practitioners from South Florida and Ontario earlier this month.

The conversation surfaced realities shared on both sides of the border: a constantly evolving regulatory landscape, the trade-offs between reinvesting in existing housing and building new, and the value of integrated, place-based approaches to community redevelopment.

The City of Miami Government Planning Department and District 3 are hosting a multi-day community workshop in Little Havana from September 30 to October 3, gathering resident input to shape architectural design guidelines for the proposed Neighborhood Revitalization District.

Plusurbia is proud to support this process, grounded in the neighborhood's history and character. Sessions include a walking tour, open studio hours, and design workshops at José Martí Park Gymnasium.

Megan McLaughlin, AICP, Director of Preservation Projects at Plusurbia, joined a panel discussion at the Coral Gables Museum on September 2, 2026, organized by the Allapattah CDC.

Titled Link + Learn: Preserving Culture and Places, the conversation was moderated by Mileyka Burgos-Flores, Founder and CEO of The Allapattah Collaborative CDC, and brought together voices in urban planning, cultural preservation, and historic documentation, including photographer Steven Brooke and Rodolfo Pou of Diaspora & Development Foundation. The discussion centered on how development can move forward while protecting the history embedded in Miami's neighborhoods.

At Plusurbia, we believe understanding a place's story is the foundation for planning its future. Proud to see Megan bring that perspective to the table.

Juan Mullerat, Founding Principal at Plusurbia, will join Mobility Matters Live In Person on September 17 at 10:00 a.m., hosted by Javier Betancourt, CITT Executive Director. The livestream airs on YouTube through the Community News Network, Miami's Community Newspapers platform. Juan will discuss how Plusurbia designs for connectivity and walkability, helping cities become more accessible and better connected for the people who live in them.

Juan Mullerat, Founding Principal at Plusurbia, joined the Ambassador of Denmark HE Jesper Moller Sorensen, Deborah Tackett (City of Miami Beach's Planning Director), Jakob Norman-Hansen (CEO of Bloxhub) and Jose Gelabert-Navia (Professor at the University of Miami) on a panel hosted by the University of Miami and the Embassy of Denmark, exploring future collaborations between Miami and Copenhagen to tackle waterfront resilience. The article, written by Chloe Harbin, explores his children's book, From Wood Blocks to City Blocks: A Young Planner's Guide to Building Better Places, part of the magazine's "Planners as Authors" feature on pages 17 and 18. https://issuu.com/apa_florida/docs/florida_planning_magazine_summer_2026

Written for readers ages five to nine, the book follows a boy named Sam as he observes his city and notices opportunities for improvement, including a scene where he sees a wheelchair user blocked by a sidewalk barrier. The story introduces young readers to the basics of urban planning and shows how small, intentional observations can lead to more accessible, connected communities. A free digital edition is available under a Creative Commons license, with a low cost print edition offered for classrooms, libraries, and community programs.
