The fearsome four were working out in our overcrowded woods clearing some of the understory to get more light and space for some red and white oaks to grow. We also found a large beaked hazlenut in bloom, lots of maple leaf viburnum and some sedges. Great way to spend a few hours this morning.

A few people have asked me what the plant is with the small white cottony puffs that are popping up around the farm. Looks almost like a milkweed. I didn’t know but several sources point to American Burn W**d. The flowers never seem to open but I have seen an occasional yellow bloom. This is a good plant for pollinators apparently though it won’t win any beauty contests. 😉

Smooth blue aster blooming in the middle (older) pollinator garden. Planted a few years ago and finally catching on, its seeds are important to our birds, and provides both pollen and nectar to many insects, butterflies and bees. And it’s a beautiful color. Though not to be confused with the taller, darker New England aster also in bloom now.

Can you spot the difference? Thanks to staff and alumni from the Student Conservation Association (SCA), nearly half an acre of Euonymus alatus (burning bush) was removed along the Glenwood Dunes trail. This non-native, invasive shrub was shading out the conservative native flora—which now has the opportunity to flourish. Thank you to all SCA staff and alumni for supporting conservation efforts across the nation!
