Happy Friday!

We do this, but aside from oats, we also add cooked rice, chia, birdseed, and all sorts of other goodies.
Interesting Idea.... 🐦
Friday, and we are road tripping! The farm is still working… bees are still foraging, hens are still laying, and the younger ones are running the farm, so your honey jars will still be filled and orders fulfilled.

The Health Benefits of Dandelions for Chickens and Ducks
Dandelions may be considered weeds, but they have some great health benefits for your backyard flock of chickens and ducks.
Which do you prefer: wildflower or clover?

Oh Milo. You’re so lucky you’re cute.
Yup.
So this happened while we were at our day jobs. 😮 Nature’s April Fool’s joke came a little late.
Cuteness overload post of the day. I think we may need a mini donkey. 🍯 🐝🦇🦋🐞
One man’s weeds is a chicken’s tasty treat. Chickens love dandelions. When it’s time to mow the yard, Wendy will pick the remaining dandelions for the ladies. Dandelions and marigolds help provide a richer, darker yolk that is higher in nutrients.
It is that time of year where honeybee swarming is likely. If you come across a honeybee swarm in Virginia (similar to the one shown on a pear tree in the picture) and happen on this post, please contact the closest beekeeping club to the swarm. The local club will be happy to help and generally have a list of members that they can use to identify the closest beekeeper to remove the swarm. A map with clubs and their contact information can be found at the Virginia State Beekeepers Association website: https://www.virginiabeekeepers.org/Local-Clubs
Swarming is how beehives naturally reproduce - i.e. a new queen remains at the original hive with about half the bees and the old queen with the other half is in this swarm sending out scout bees looking for a suitable new home. While a clustered honeybee swarm is generally very docile, it is best to still keep your distance and let the beekeepers handle the removal. If no beekeeper is available, that's okay too. The swarm will eventually locate a suitable home (hopefully not yours🙂) and will usually be gone within a few days.
Did you know that dandelions are a food source for all pollinators? Their nectar provides us with pure deliciousness! Oh and the chickens love them too.

Last week the US celebrated “Save the Dandelions” day. Here’s more on why this plant is vital to pollinator health.

Let your grass embrace its wildness
This is why we love MOM's Organic Market, and we do business with them. Check out their Save the Dandelions campaign. This will also help you understand why you can no longer see the gravel walkway that leads to the front porch at Quail and Hound Farms, and why we let the weeds grow wild; weeds naturally feed our bees, and we do not use herbicides in order to maintain the health and safety of our bees and all pollinators.

MOM’s annual “Save the Dandelions” campaign helps raise awareness on the effects that toxic lawn chemicals have on our environment, wildlife, pollinators, and health. Why Save the Dandelions? Every year, 3 million tons of fertilizers and 33,500 tons of synthetic pesticides are used on U.S. law...
Happy Monday all. 🍯

That would be me. 😆
Some bee humor for this Friday eve.
From this and this to this! Filling jars!
Our hens are happily laying again and eggs are going fast. Reach out if you want farm fresh eggs straight from the coop in our backyard. Available for pickup at the farm or at the Vienna Farmer’s Market starting in early May.
Folks often ask if there’s really a difference between farm fresh eggs and those mass produced and found in grocery stores. You tell us. Look at the deep yellow-orange of the yolk; that’s from happy hens that are fed marigolds as a supplement to their free-range grub.
If you’ve never tried our rubs and spices, now is the time! This garlic bread was amazingly delicious and simple to make…a baguette, melted real butter, and Q&H Garlic Lovers.
We certainly had showers today in N. Virginia. The bees weren’t happy, but they will be come next month’s nectar flows.
Last fall, we began selling honeycomb, and we are often asked if it can be eaten. Yes! Comb is completely edible. At home, we chew it and add it to charcuterie boards.
So what is honeycomb? Honeycomb is a natural product made by honey bees to store honey and pollen or house their larvae. It consists of a series of hexagonal cells constructed from beeswax which generally contain raw honey. Honeycomb may also contain trace amounts of bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly — additional bee products with potential health benefits of their own. You can eat the whole honeycomb, including the honey and wax cells, which are chewy almost like gum. 🍯 🐝
We’re often asked if crystallized honey means it has gone bad. No, quiet the opposite. Crystallized honey is a testament to the honey’s raw quality. Raw, unfiltered honey from the hive will naturally crystallize when it gets cold versus grocery store honey that is usually pasteurized or has added sugar or corn syrup. Our clover tends to crystallize faster than the wildflower because of the higher glucose content of the clover.
Next question usually is, how do I make it a liquid again? First, do not refrigerate honey as this will speed up crystallization and is unnecessary because honey is naturally antimicrobial. Place it in a warm spot such as a windowsill in your kitchen. If/ when it does eventually crystallize, place the jar in a warm water bath until completely liquified or just add a spoonful straight into your tea, yogurt, etc. DO NOT microwave the honey; otherwise, you just cooked and pasteurized it destroying all the natural qualities we love so much.
