We were out running errands this afternoon and came home to a large swarm in one of our trees. We were able to get a couple boxes under it and collect the bees. This swarm probably came from one of our colonies that outgrew the hive. The rainy weather lately has kept us from getting into every hive to evaluate growth and add boxes where needed. Thankfully we saw this swarm in time and are able to get the bees set up in a new hive back in the apiary.

We have a large weeping crabapple tree in our front yard and it is a springtime favorite for the bees. If you stand close and listen, the whole tree hums with bees.

We got to see something really cool with this swarm. The swarm originated from a wild hive living in a dead tree on the property. We were able to observe the remaining bees coming and going through a hole in the tree. We were very excited since wild hives are very rare.

As the year comes to a close, we had the opportunity to check in on our hives to see how they are doing. We have only had 1 loss this winter so far. Some clusters are very large and others are smaller, but we’re pleased they are doing so well. Over the next few days we’ll be adding some additional emergency food stores to the hives to insure they don’t starve. We also want to thank you all for your support. As we look ahead to 2025, we have some ideas for a few new items and we look forward to sharing them with you when they become available. We wish you all a Happy New Year!
