A lovely visit with my sister Kathleen Darroch today reframed my allocation of time to research the storied past of Stone Hollow Farm and our impressive 40 foot four story New England gambrel barn! The broad end of the barn's stone foundation faces west to absorb the prevailing winds and storms as a buffer, to shield the stalls housing cattle and horses. The bank side to the east caught the morning sun and was beneficial for loading the harvest of hay and grain. The south side caught the most sun to warm the barn and in later years windows were added to raise chickens. The north side faces the farm house as the shortest distance to reach the barn but also lent itself to a breeze blowing through the first level to cool the animals. Evidence of the past is everywhere. Beams and pottery shards and the way the sun shines and the wind blows.

We are so grateful at Stone Hollow Farm that the fridges and freezers have been emptied and we truly hope our meals will satisfy. Making room this week for Hungarian Hot Pepper Soup with a blend of sweet and hot peppers from Ronald Human farm. Cream and wine, tender vegetables and mild Italian sausage oh so good! Finally on the schedule after weeks of requests, Shepherds Pie! Local Beef from Rose Baker of Baker Farm Medina and our farm raised lamb. Topped with creamy mashed potatoes and cheese. We can't keep up with Chicken Pot Pie! A 7 pound chicken from Frost Farms of Gasport will refill the freezer. Beef and Stout Pot Pie is steady and ready for consumption. Grateful. That's how we feel at Stone Hollow Farm about the number of neighbors enjoying our take home meals and breads! This week by multiple requests we are slow simmering beef and roasting bones for rich bone broth from Rose Baker of Baker Farm Medina for Beef and Stout Pot Pie. We rendered another batch of lard for a succulent tender crust. Italian food is never out of favor any time of year. Spinach and Ricotta Stuffed Shells in our homemade family recipe sauce. Thick, full bodied and bright with plump stuffed shells. People ask how we produce so much flavor out of our modest farm kitchen. We have no idea! Dedication and team work. I had a lovely walk to the elderberry hedge this afternoon with Livestock dogs Rafferty and Murphy by my side. Baking was done and the cool breeze felt refreshing after preparing for the Lockport Community Farmers Market tomorrow. I carried a bucket and scissors, simple. It was quick work to fill as I did early this morning as well. The harvest is plentiful this year and we will have 1 lb quart baskets brimming with fresh snipped berries for sale at the market. As a child, at 42 State Street, my neighbor Mrs. Waters would harvest elderberries from a bush behind our barn and bake us a pie. See you tomorrow!

Stone Hollow Farm SURVEY BEING PART OF LOT 5, SECT.1, TWP. 15, RG 5 OF THE HOLLAND PURCHASE. It has been a particular delight to be situated next to the historic LeValley Cemetery on Pearson Road Middleport. It is the resting place of both Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers, family members and early community members. Our abstract of title for the farm revealed it was formerly known as the Squire Compton Farm. The farm supplied beef and horses to the army and the family was very embedded in downtown Middleport. Squire was laid to rest in the cemetery on Royalton Center Road, but we discovered that one family member has a lovely old stone marker next to the farm. Years ago, the ghost of a Civil War soldier occasionally made his presence known at the foot of the bed at night but has since moved on. As we continue to develop the land and make improvements, the evidence of stewardship remains. Sounds like a lovely day can be had visiting downtown Middleport with lunch at the farm and a walk through the cemetery. Just watch out for apparitions:)

There is a calm and serenity embedded in farm life that takes place in the wee hours of the morning during chores and later in the summer eve when day is finally done. It is reflected in the wholesome breads and meals while ingredients are thoughtfully gathered. Local farms like Frost Farms of Gasport and Rose Baker from Baker Farm. Harrington's Produce and Ronald Human of Human Farm, Hiller's Sweet Corn Farm. Hard and rigorous labor that brings local flavor! Summer Savory Pie.
