The Year On Stone Hollow Farm. "May dulls the memory of winter and confirms that summer is at hand". MDK. The May clock is about to expire. The list of spring chores is long, but favorable weather allows a good portion accomplished. The sheep have been separated male and female and are out on rotating pastures. The barn swallows have returned. They don't care to share quarters with Livestock Guardians Rafferty and Murphy on the ground level of the four story barn. They build their muddy nests on the sturdy beams of the third floor. The ground has been saturated with spring rain but finally fences in the summer pasture are repaired after strong winter winds, grape vines and wayward deer had taken their toll. The back gate was opened and our horses Molly, Gypsy and Roland are enjoying warm days in wide space on green grass. May is the month to dig holes. Fence posts, gates and gardens before the June sun hardens the ground. Falling into bed as the sun sets and prioritizing the next work day is a May through every day at Stone Hollow Farm . Each new day dawns and sets and the rest is left to the turn of the day.

The long weekend brings time to rest and reflect. We thought some meals to make the weekend and work week easier would be in order. Broccoli Cheddar Soup is always a favorite. Hatching American Buff Geese is a particular habit of mine each spring. I picked up our goose and gander Pete and Tilly from a farm in Lockport many years ago. American Buffs are rare and hard to hatch. Unlike chickens, geese only lay eggs in the spring. Domesticated birds that are linked to migration grow their bodies fast and their brains lag behind. Out of a dozen eggs, only three hatched. Two of the three had splayed legs meaning they couldn't stand in the 24 to 48 hour period after hatch. No worries. I bound their legs with band aids to bring their hips in alignment and now all three are fully mobile. I have 30 days invested in incubating and another week in nurturing. Today the warming lamp was turned off and they spent a lovely first day in the lush spring grass. Lucky Cat had to be told to keep his distance. Tomorrow they will leave my garage and join the gaggle at Stone Hollow Farm . MDK

It doesn't take too long to discover what meals hit that sweet spot. Local beef from Rosie at Baker Farm in Medina is spot on for Steak, Corn And Black Bean Chili! Spicy and just the right portion of beans and vegetables and oh so tender slow cooked beef. Frost Farms of Gasport sold out of whole chickens at the Lockport Community Farmers Market but no worries. We will meet up this week to get a local bird for our Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese! Creamy, saucy and truly unique. A great stand alone meal or side. Just a few left of our Meatballs and Sauce and Chicken Pot Pie! Sweets and more to enjoy at the farm Thursday through Saturday and pickups at the Lockport Community Market on Saturday.
