We got our first swarm call of the season today here at Honey Haven Farm. Swarms are a natural part of how honeybees create new colonies. When the existing colony becomes too crowded, a large amount of worker bees will leave with the queen bee in search of a place to build a new colony. Before the bees find a new place to call home, they will gather together on tree branches, fences, or other surfaces while scout bees look for an ideal location. This occurs most commonly between the months of April and June.

If you find a swarm, we will come and remove it free of charge. Just give us a text or call at (707) 331-5494 or send a message here on Facebook.

The 2024 production season is over HHF produced fall and spring honey this year though due to low fall production no fall honey will be available. Here are some pictures showcasing the color difference of fall and spring honey.

Spring honey contains lighter nectar mostly from vetch and clover both high production plants and has a higher water content than fall honey meaning it flows more.

Fall honey contains darker nectar mostly from yellow starthistle a lower production plant with less nectar yield it also has a much lower water content meaning it is much thicker than spring honey.

The hexagon jars are control samples (not for sale) the Queenline jars are our saleable jars. The particulate in the spring hex jar is sugar crystals beginning to form and the honey starting to crystallize.

Got a message from AVR tree service today for a hive in a log. This was one of the easiest removals that I've done so far and one of the best-looking as well. The guys were able to remove the honey from the hive so I'm glad it didn't go to waste as after a hive removal their previous resources are of no use.

The 2024 spring honey flow has begun! The main nectar producer around in the spring in lake county is hairy vetch which is a viny legume that produces large amounts of nectar with long purple flowers. The pictures of the frames show new acorn solid plastic frames being drawn out by the bees with wax and filled with nectar that will be dried down and converted to honey. These pictures were taken around the 23 of April and the bees have packed in even more nectar since then posts to follow on honey production.

A short video from the hive removal showing the forced abscond method in action I had a glove on only because the smoker had been blowing hot embers out of the back and my hand was getting burned.
