It’s official! Boo is tagged for the Frederick County Fair, Virginia! He did a pretty good job walking with Lenah through to each station. There’s room for improvement, but he showed Lenah is making decent progress! Thank you to everyone who helped this morning and made tag-in a smooth process!

Can you believe it?!?! Lenah was able to put a halter on Boo this evening. There was no forcing him; he just stood there while Lenah fit the halter around his ears. Wanting this first experience to be a positive one, she proceeded to scratch under his chin, give him positive praise, and then use her show stick to scratch his chest and belly. After about 10 minutes, she took the halter off and gave him lots of love. Hopefully he continues to be calm and accepting of Lenah as she figures this steer showing out!

Slowly but surely, making progress…

These first head scratches have taken just shy of a full week of hanging out outside of the pin multiple times a day, chatting about nothing from the corner with a hand reached out to offer a sniff, a closer hand with a treat from outside the pin, then inside the pin, and finally the chance to reach a few fingers out to scratch the forehead. Not to mention the regular husbandry that has occurred. It takes a lot of patience, care, and dedication on both of their parts as they grow to trust each other.

It was an exciting weekend on the farm!! Saturday, Lenah went to a rabbit show nearby to show her Californians. She had quite the successful show! In Show A, Virginia and Yeti won Best of Breed and Best Opposite, respectively. In Show B, Virginia and Thunderbird won Best of Breed and Best Opposite, respectively. Virginia went on to win 2nd Reserve Champion when she went up against all the youth BOBs in Show B. Quite a win for her!

On Sunday, Lenah’s steer arrived on the farm. He walked right off the trailer, mosied on into his pin, and stayed put. He got more comfortable as the afternoon went on, drinking his water and eating his dinner. After spending some time with him, Lenah decided to name him after a character in Nightmare Before Christmas and call him “Boo.” All in all, it was quite a weekend!!

We built a rock structure in the paddock for Chai and Poppy. Poppy isn’t sure yet, but hopefully she’ll find it a cool & comfy place to lay. Chai needed a little coaxing (I guess rock-climbing doesn’t come 100% naturally), but quickly fell in love with being able to jump and climb. Making an entertaining space for these two is so much fun!

My daughter has decided to get out of Dutch to focus on her Californians. So, she’s 👀 for a 🏡 for her 🐰. She’d prefer they go as a group, but is willing to separate. They are quality Dutch, both bucks and does, some are proven. Details are with their photos. PM if you’re interested.

We’d like to take a minute to welcome Poppy to our farm! Poppy is the cutest pot-bellied pig. She likes marshmallows and carrots and sleeping these hot days away in the shade. We’ve learned she’s not so fond of being sprayed with cool water, and isn’t too sure of her goat-mate, Chai. Crossing our fingers they’ll become friends! Welcome to the family, Poppy!

Showing home-bred rabbits at the fair is such an honor. Taking care of rabbits year round, selecting breeding pairs, and then caring for tiny babies is so much responsibility. But it’s all worth it! Lenah’s Californian babies are so sweet and just love her. We were so excited to be chosen as Reserve Champion Market Rabbit with Thorn Hollow Farm’s Monster Under the Stairs, aka Snallygaster. He is a beautiful rabbit! We’re excited to continue to breed and produce our own Californians to show!
