Throughout the week, we're celebrating the many reasons farmers markets matter. Today's reason is one you won't find in the produce aisle of a grocery store... the people behind your food.

A grocery store can tell you what something is.
A farmers market can tell you who grew it.

Want to know when those tomatoes were picked? Just ask.
Wondering how those peaches got so sweet? Ask the farmer.
Never cooked eggplant before? Someone at the next tent probably has a favorite recipe they'd be happy to share.

Farmers markets aren't just places to shop. They're places to have conversations. To ask questions. To sample something new. To learn the story behind the food on your table and the people who worked hard to bring it there. That's something no self-checkout at a big-box store can ever replace.

This week, we're putting the spotlight on Willow Oaks, our Vendor of the Week.

Willow Oaks has a pretty remarkable history. They are the oldest organic farm in Maryland and one of the oldest organic orchards in the country. What I love most about what they do is that they’re not just growing fruit. They’re preserving heritage varieties, teaching sustainable growing practices, sharing what they know, and turning what they grow into everything from jams, butters and syrups to ciders and dessert wines.

This Thursday, they'll be talking everything FIGS!

Dani, Lori and Eric will be at the market talking about growing fig trees, taking care of them, harvesting and preparing the fruit, and answering your questions about growing your own.

Oh yeah, and there will be a fig tasting, too!

It’s finally fig season, and Willow Oaks is bringing a little piece of the Garden of Eden to Middletown. Come taste the actual fruit, learn something new, and get to know one of the farms that has been helping Maryland grow for a very long time.

Our first figs have made their appearance and we have some to share with you.

Conadria fig
The 3rd fig Thomas Jefferson brought home from France was Marseilles, a big, sweet, green/yellow fig.
Today, we offer an improved variation of Marseilles - Conadria, a very large, green/yellow fig with high sugar content. Some single figs will fill a tea cup. It can be used for dried figs and fresh fruit.

Come see us today and all our Middletown Farmers' Market family and pick up a few figs.
We also have fresh blackberries, eggs, fig trees, fruit butters, applesauce, salts and jams!
We also offer Cider tastings to top it all off.

Our first figs have found their way into our baskets.
Oh the joy!
We will have our first fresh figs of the season available at the Middletown Farmers' Market, Brunswick Main Street Farmers Market and of course at our Cider tasting room at Willow Oaks starting this week!
We also have beautiful fig trees for purchase and so much more.

Varietal ciders honoring the intrepid families who settled US land grants

Required to make improvements on their claim, homesteaders built small structures, farmed their fields and planted orchards. Planting apple trees demonstrated commitment that these new homesteaders would stay-that apple tree would not fruit until many years after planting.
