Although I wasn’t a barrel racer, this is definitely what riding always was for me…
What is a Can Chaser? Isn’t it just a barrel racer?
Well picture if you will an evening after a full day of work; after you’ve handled all the responsibilities and stresses and you decide to go watch a barrel race …
But instead of just a race you see more..
Dust floated in the late evening light, turning everything golden, almost magical if you didn’t look too closely.
Yet when you watch each rider closely you’d see it: the tension in her shoulders, the tight grip on the reins, the weight she carried that had nothing to do with the ride.
She wasn’t just chasing barrels. She was chasing a version of herself she felt like she’d lost.
Life had been loud lately. Responsibilities stacking up. Expectations closing in. The kind of pressure that doesn’t leave bruises you can see, but you feel it in your chest, in your thoughts, in the way even the smallest tasks start to feel overwhelming.
She showed up anyway, like she always did. But this time felt different.
This time, she wasn’t sure she had it in her.
She cleared the first barrel, the second, then she hit the third, it fell and her run wasn’t clean anymore the speed she was going didn’t matter
Sometimes those barrels are the most important goals you want to achieve by successfully getting around each one as fast as you can ..,but not today...for the first time in a long time she wasn’t thinking about the loss..She wasn’t thinking about what she hadn’t done, what she should be, or who she felt like she was letting down.
She was just riding.
And for the first time in a long time, she enjoyed the ride and she felt free.
At Can Chasers, we’ve seen this moment more times than we can count.
It’s not always about competition. It’s not always about winning. Sometimes, it’s about showing up on the days when everything feels heavy.
It’s about finding a space where the outside world quiets down, even if just for a little while.
That’s when you know you’re a Can Chaser..never letting the can’ts get in the way of what you can do!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we just want you all to know that we see you, the struggles you face each day and the energy it takes sometimes just to show up
Mental health isn’t something we only talk about when things fall apart. It’s something we build, ride by ride, moment by moment.
At Can Chasers we focus on making the connection with a horse; the unspoken understanding, the grounding presence. And ultimately the connection with yourself!
For some, it’s the community and the people who cheer you on whether you had your best run or your hardest one. And sometimes, it’s simply having a place where you can breathe.
We know that strength doesn’t always look like pushing through. Sometimes, it looks like slowing down. Asking for help. Taking a break. Or just giving yourself permission to not have it all figured out.
This Mental Health Month, we want to remind you:
You don’t have to run every race at full speed.
You don’t have to carry everything alone.
And you don’t have to be perfect to belong here.
Whether you’re chasing barrels, chasing goals, or just trying to get through the day; we’re here for all of it.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the ride.
It’s about the rider.
And every rider deserves a place to feel strong again!!
So come as you are. Bring the messy days, the good days, and everything in between.
We’ll meet you in the arena.
