Huge shout out and thank you to MIgardener for being a sponsor of the 2026 Mitten Homesteaders - Michigan Conference! It was a great event, and I was so psyched to be handed a mystery packet from my favorite seed company upon checking in Friday morning. I just opened it today, and let out a squeal of excitement when I realized I got some Trifecta+ in my packet!! I have been wanting to try some of their fertilizer for the last couple of years, and its either been out of stock or I've forgotten to add it to my order anytime I'm looking to place one. This is just a tiny packet, but I will most definitely be testing it out in my garden this year. I am headed outside right now to start planting the rest of my garden beds, and I'll probably put together a pot for the salad bowl mix seeds that came in my packet from the conference! πŸ˜‹

I had an excellent time meeting everyone at the Mitten Homesteaders Conference this year! Lots of new faces, lots of familiar faces, and an overall great time was had! I loved learning more about trapping and goat hoof trimming.

My favorite part, was when Jami (one of the organizers) told me that a 12 year old girl had attended my artificial insemination talk, and thought I was so cool and she wanted to be just like me one day! Its so fulfilling to get that kind of feedback - I love inspiring people to be more self-sufficient, build their confidence to try something new, and teach the next generation invaluable skills like those needed on the homestead. I hope that young lady is able to pursue her dreams and have a homestead of her own one day, because 20 years ago, I was that little girl, and I know 12 year old me would be so psyched to know that one day she'd have a homestead with as many cows, goats, and chickens as her heart desired. 12 year old me probably would have fainted at the idea of being a beekeeper one day, though. 🀣

This year's conference also brought about some unexpected last minute schedule changes due to another speaker having a family emergency, but I was able to step up and give a talk on beekeeping! There were a lot of people that were just getting their feet wet with information about beekeeping, and I hope many of them will choose to learn more throughout the year and get bees next spring!

See you all next year!!

😍 This girl. Part of me wants her to stay little forever because she's so dang adorable, but part of me can't wait to watch her grow up.

Saturday I had just gotten inside from checking on our bees, when I heard the chickens going nuts. I rushed to check the cameras to see what had happened, and I found the second most surprising thing I've ever seen on our cameras. A poor turkey had made the mistake of walking in our yard. This offended one of our hens. Our little ISA Brown hen took it upon herself to attack the turkey until it quite literally ran for its life out and away from our property! Enjoy the circus that is our life!

Ignore the funny sounds of the video - chickens sound like cows in slo-mo when they're alerting to something. 🀣

First grader chicks update! Of the 89 that were brought home in batch 1 yesterday, 12 have been sold to a new home, 12 have been adopted by our broody hen, Maggie, and 12 have been adopted by another broody hen! We have two more broody hens that we hope to get settled in with another 12 chicks each tonight. Batch 2 of the first grader chicks were brought home today! Follow along for more chickie updates, or message us if you'd like to take some home for yourself! $2/chick straight run. Eggcellent starter flock for anyone looking to get into chickens or add to their existing flock! Wide variety of egg colors.

Do you know a first grader who hatched out chicks in the Midland School District? Many of them have made it back to their new home! We have two stock tanks of baby chicks, with more coming home tomorrow and the final batch next week. Some of these babies will be placed under our broody hens tonight in separate brooder boxes, in hopes that they'll be adopted. In total, we'll have over 150 new baby chicks this year! And we don't need all of them. So if anyone is looking to add to their flock, we have straight run, barnyard mix (all standard breed, no bantams) chicks, we have them for $2/chick! Great egg layers, and range in color from blues to greens to browns, and maybe a white egg layer in there somewhere. Majority blue, green, and brown layer breeds.

The power has been out since around 6:30pm last night, and we don't have enough extension cords to make it down to the stanchion from the garage (backed up by a generator). Luckily, Little Girl is halter trained. I think she stood better for me today tied to our front porch than she does in the stanchion. Maybe she likes the change of scenery. 🀣

Hoping we get power back tonight. Estimated restoration time is 6:45pm now. 😬
