Happy Monday. This little guy serenades me every night from under the deck, but tonight we got a show up close as he enjoys a snack of the insects that are hanging around the light. If only I could tickle his toes through the glass!❤️

Hello! A long time since I posted. Life is interfering with my life!😂
Just popping in to tell you I have some bouquets going to Re*****on’s Farmers Market today. The first of the dahlias are in the bouquets this week. Celosia is in great form and the zinnias are fantastic. They all have been enjoying the sporadic rain we have been having!
The market is open 3-7. The bouquets will be at Piney Meadow Farms’s stand. So go visit Sussanah for your fruits and vegetables and pick up some flowers to put a smile on your face. As always thanks for buying local. 🌸

Lisianthus in full bloom this week! We love this flower. With a really long vase life and several blossoms on each stem, what’s not to love? You have to plant them in the cold spring months and wait until July for them, but they are worth it.

Some people have been asking about Japanese beetle control. This has some good ideas.

You saw the beetles wrecking your roses, so you hung one of those yellow bag traps. It filled up fast. That's exactly the problem.

The full bag looks like proof it's working. It isn't.

Those traps run on two lures at once — a sweet floral scent and a synthetic copy of the female beetle's mating pheromone. Together they're strong enough to pull Japanese beetles in from far past your property line. Study after study from university extension programs says the same blunt thing: the trap draws in more beetles than it ever catches.

Most of the ones it summons never reach the bag. They land on your roses, your beans, your grapevines on the way there — and they stay to feed. A garden with a trap usually takes more damage than a garden with none.

You didn't set a trap. You raised a beacon.

Here's what actually works, and it costs nothing. In the cool of early morning or evening, when the beetles are slow and clumsy, hold a cup of soapy water under them and tap the leaf. They drop straight in. Feeding beetles give off a scent that calls in more, so clearing them early keeps the pile from building. Do it daily through the peak weeks.

Already own a trap? Don't hang it near the plants you love. Put it at the far edge of the yard, downwind, working for your whole street instead of against your garden.

The full bag isn't a win. It's an invitation.

Big 4th of July weekend. Flowers are stacked waiting to become beautiful bouquets.
As usual, find my bouquets at Re*****on’s Farmers Market Thursday from 3-7 in the Piney Meadow Farm produce tent. You know you need your corn and watermelon for the weekend! Why not add some beautiful flowers to that?
The farm stand will be open only Thursday and Friday this week. So you can get some flowers here in the farm if you are driving by.
Stand closed over the weekend because I will have my flowers at Screaming Goats Farm and Brewery in Amissville. Looks like a great time with food trucks, live music and vendors and of course beer!! I will be sharing a tent with Bunny’s Bloomers, another local flower farmer. Look for the pretty pink tent! We will be there 12-4 both Saturday and Sunday. Stop by and say high!

As we end National Pollinators Week, we can’t forget the important work done by our fascinating bees. The native and honey bees are constantly working my flower fields. And sometimes they are just sleeping!
