This year's pigs arrived today. This is pretty late compared to the last 2 years, so we'll be curious to see how they compare weight-wise come butcher time.

Jane had 3 kids today - 2 girls and 1 boy. This ends birthing season for goats and sheep for the year.

Hopefully have 3 calves born later in the summer.

Poppy had her babies last night. They're really tiny compared to the lambs.

Two ewe lambs born to our two sheep this week. They're both adorable!

Now we wait for our two goats to give birth in the next week or so (and later summer for our cows).

It is with mixed emotions that I share with you the end of an era. Most of our customers already know as Emma sent out emails, but because of full-time school and jobs, Emma, Aaron, and Eliza will no longer be raising meat chickens or turkeys.

Emma finished her AA degree last year and is hoping to start paralegal classes soon. Aaron is finishing up the Carpentry program at the Technical College and will be seeking a full-time job.

We have all appreciated your support over the years! All 3 were able to use the money toward college and other expenses, and, most importantly, they learned valuable lessons that will last them a lifetime.

Thank you all so much!

Winter is a great time to focus on indoor projects. This year I decided to start making kefir again. On the left is milk kefir, and on the right is water kefir. Both have a lot of health benefits. I'm currently working to transition the milk kefir grains to raw milk. Initially they have to be rehydrated in pasteurized milk, and then they're slowly transitioned to raw milk.

The water kefir is struggling a bit due to high mineral content in our water. (We are having our water tested today to see if we need to change anything for both human and animal use. We do have a water filtration system for in home use.)

After these are established, next project is restarting kombucha. I used to make all three of these before we moved to Milaca, and I'm happy to be making them again.

Seeing all the farmers having issues this week especially while battling our own is making me feel discouraged this morning. The temp feels like -28 and it's noon. Yesterday our house water pipes froze twice. Then we discovered our Ritchie (auto animal waterer) froze. Turns out the pipes burst underneath the ground. So now we have to move animals and will be carrying water buckets (or buying an expensive heated hose) for the remainder of the winter. With a husband who works a 12+ hour rotating shift (changes between night and day) and two teens who work/school full time, this is far from ideal. Frankly, it sucks.

Animals have died, water is frozen, vehicles won't start... it's hard to find the bright side today.

This morning we woke up to wind chills around 35 below and frozen water pipes. Shortly after that was fixed and we had water, we discovered the animals' waterer was frozen and dry as well. Chris worked night shift, but this is a situation that can't wait, so he and Aaron are out in the brutal cold working to get the waterer working again.

This goat was fine last night, but this morning, he's near death. The animals all have sufficient shelter, but it's cold as heck, and a hundred things could explain why he's down.
