Time for Pruning at Whispering Spring. There are many styles of pruning, but the principles are the same. We cut the vertical growth (shoots) off leaving two horizontal growths tied to a wire. The pictures show a before and after.

Pruning is the priority every year at the vineyard every year. Pruning is quite labor intensive as each plant (vine) has to be assessed individually. We remove around 90% of the growth from the previous year. The video compares vines before and after pruning.

Every year, new growth occurs in the vines at Whispering Spring. As soon as the weather is favorable (last week of April), shoots grow from each bud. Shoots contain a stem and leaves. Generally, two clusters of grapes will grow in each shoot at its base (although that can vary from variety to variety). The vine will attach itself to any structure using its tendrils. Cuando llega la primavera en la ultima semana de abril, empiezan a brotar los sarmientos. Sale un tallo, y de alli, las hojas y los pequenhos racimos de uvas. Generalmente dos racimos crecen en la base del sarmiento pero esto depende de la variedad de uva. El zarcillo lo utiliza la vid para agarrarse a cualquier estructura que este cerca y para poder crecer.
Vamos a seguir las vides durante la temporada hasta que llegue la vendimia que ocurrira alla por Septiembre o tal vez Octubre. We will be following the growth of our vines as they develop throughout the year. Harvest should occur in late September or Early October.
