We had a total blessing in disguise this past week! The gravel pit just up the road where I keep my Bees officially went active in processing and has federally become a mine again. That means no outsiders can be in there, and I had to move my bees.
Last summer we had a gentleman come by and purchase some furniture we had sitting outside and he mentioned he would like to have Bees on his property about 5 miles as the crow flies from us.
I went over and checked it out last Saturday and Sunday we were able to move them to the most beautiful hidden protected setting.
The cool thing is, I have been praying that we would increase our honey production and hives this year so we would at least break even in our efforts after four years.
It was perfect timing that the gravel pit manager was on property when I went to tend the bees on Friday, and was told at that time that I would need to move them soon. I say this because we are right at the beginning of the season and the hives needed to be split and the new queens mated.
I truly believe if we would have waited another week, it would not have been a good scenario at all.
Last night we went over to check on them and remove the feeders and check for drones. When I checked on them Friday, I did not see very few at all but last night the boys are back!
We put in the double screen boards to start the splits and will check on them in 7 to 10 days to see if the queenless sections started making Queen cells .
If that’s the case, we know we were successful, and can split the four hives into 8 hives.
We’ve also set up a couple, empty hives to hopefully catch some wild swarms in that area.
We also have another yard a few miles away that would like to have us put Bees there as well. We have put swarm traps up in hopes that we will also catch some wild swarms there.
Our goal is to put the new hives that we split over at the other place which is also an amazing property.
Have a blessed day.
