We're starting to wrap up our third year of MAPS here at the farm! 🪶🐦✨

We've had some exciting new species visit the station this year including:

Yellow-headed Vireo
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Grasshopper Sparrow
Louisiana Water thrush

Once every 10 days throughout the breeding season, birds are captured and given an aluminum leg band with an individual number. A series of measurements are then taken that can help us identify the age, s*x, and species of the birds.

Recording this data during breeding season helps us learn more about production, survivability and overall trends in bird populations due to climate change, land use and many other factors!

We're fortunate here at Caitlyn Farms to see a variety of grassland bird species at our station, helping us highlight the important role agricultural land can play in conserving bird habitat, and further spotlighting bird biodiversity on the forgotten farmlands of the southeast! 🧡🌱

🚨 All birds are handled by trained professionals with proper state and federal permits and permissions for scientific research. Never attempt to capture or handle wildlife at home. 🚨

What's good for the herd is good for the bird! 🐮🪶

Since 2018, we have been actively working to use our cattle as a management tool to restore native grasslands and manage wildlife habitat here at the farm.

One of our key focal species is the Northern Bobwhite, and while we only occasionally see these little guys, the males distinct "bob-white" whistle can be heard all summer long here on the farm. Undisturbed grasslands, brushy vegetation and soft woodland edges are critical for the survival of these neat little ground-nesting birds.

Management practices as simple as putting the bushhog away and leaving unmowed buffers around crops can make all of the difference for Bobwhites on your property. Give it a try today to hear these iconic birds whistle return to the landscape.🌱✨

Caitlyn Farms and the White Oak Creek Wildlife Management Area is home to almost 80 acres of restored native meadows, grasslands, and roadside wildflower plantings. These plantings provide diverse forage for our herd, essential habitat and nesting cover for wildlife, and a valuable food source for insects, birds, and pollinators! 🐦🪲🦋🐝🦌🦃
