It’s that time of year again- we have fresh Babydoll Southdown lambs! 🐑

Babydoll Southdowns have the most incredible personalities and are known for being gentle, quiet, affectionate and hardy.

A Hutte coffee table with flowers from our garden. The clean Japandi inspired form hides a secret; intricate Japanese knock down joinery.
Okuri-yose-ari (housed sliding segmented dovetails) are hidden in the tops of legs and in the stretcher you can just see a wedge, which locks together a joint adapted from Nuki bracing.

Took a little time over the past days of working on the Pizza Shrine, to cut new kanna dai! Two in Osage orange, and another Bubinga, two are laminated.
This exercise was actually born of necessity. In the pizza shrine, we have 36 Kanawa-Tsugi halves, each requiring large flat sliding surfaces that must perfectly mate with each other. I have been using my 42mm kanna, but I knew a 56mm with a longer than usual dai, and 3 contact points would be the perfect thing for this task.. and if I waited any longer I wouldn’t have any more kanawA’s left to try the new tools out on 😆.
I think there’s some old saying about how The tools make the craftsperson, or something along those lines..

Found some pictures of my grandfather in the studio, and of his sculptural work/shows (from around the 1950’s/60’s).
First picture is of a sculpture that is now in our living room - pretty amazing to have pieces like this to carry on the memory, even though he has been gone for 30+ years.
I’d love to get more into this sort of work in the future.

Building furniture with wood saved from our clients’ own trees is one of the most rewarding things we do.
To that end, a few weeks ago I spent a day carefully re-leveling the bunks inside the solar kiln. Since the kiln is heated by the sun, there is no way to turn it off for maintenance, and it was about 140* in there 😂 🥵.
It’s very important the bunk supports are perfectly level accross the whole 14’ with no high spots or twist. If not the wet wood will adapt to the funky shape while drying.
The load shown is one of our largest with about 1000bdf of beautiful wide white Ash from a clients property. We are already under 20% moisture content and heading quickly for the equalization and bug killing cycles. Follow along to see what gorgeous material becomes.
