Did you know on August 16, 1777, British General Burgoyne was moving south thru the Champlain Valley & attempted to capture a much needed supply depot in Bennington, VT where the British & Hessians were met a few miles from Bennington (actually in Hoosick, NY) by Colonels Seth Warner & John Stark with their 350 Green Mountain Boys.

The British were turned away after a pitched battle & later defeated at Saratoga, NY, often considered the turning point in the American Revolution. The lack of supplies contributed to the surrender of the entire British army at Saratoga.

The 306 foot tall Bennington Battle Monument was dedicated in 1891 & is the tallest man-made structure in VT. Vermont continues to celebrate the battle with a state holiday every August 16. As a retired 31 year Vermont state employee, I’ll take the day off, too.

Did you know the Brookfield (VT) Floating Bridge was originally built in 1820 to help local residents cross Sunset Lake after it iced over during the winter? The bridge, a series of pontoons covered by planks, has been rebuilt 8 times over the past 203 years & is the only floating bridge east of the Mississippi River. Sitting next to the bridge are two companion Hippo sculptures called “Father & Son”. The artist, Jim Sardonis, also created “Whale’s Tails” in Vermont (a Fun Fact for another time). On July 7, 1777, British Lt. General Burgoyne & his British regulars were making their way down the Champlain Valley when they met General Seth Warner & 1,200 Americans from Vermont, Massachusetts, & New Hampshire in the fields near Hubbardton, Vermont. After several hours of fighting, the Americans began to leave the field & conducted a successful rear guard action inflicting many British casualties.

Did you know the 7th Vermont Infantry fought during the 1st Vicksburg, Mississippi, campaign? The Vermonters were based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, already in Union hands & were ordered north to Vicksburg to participate in the initial siege in June 1862. The Vermonters traveled in gunboats up the Mississippi River & fought in the operations until July 1862 when the overall Union attempt to capture Vicksburg failed. The siege was abandoned & the 7th Vermont returned to Baton Rouge. Federal forces under General Grant finally captured Vicksburg July 3, 1863.

Did you know the monument memorializing the Vermont 2nd Brigade’s 4th of July, 1863 action at Gettysburg was erected in 1889 on that hallowed ground. As General Picket’s confederates neared the federal position by a stone wall, the Vermonters, led by General George Stannard of Burlington, VT, maneuvered his Vermonters to flank Pickett’s Charge with a blistering barrage. The US General Abner Doubleday yelled “Glory to God, See the Vermonters Go.”
