I just set up an account on this (free!) app that allows you to find local farmers and gardeners to source your food and produce from.

Egg season is about to come to a close for 2026 but as the Half-Ass Homestead grows and I’m able to expand my offerings in 2027, I’m hoping that this provides a valuable resource both for me and for providing fresh, clean, local food to my immediate community.

I forgot to take pictures out of the incubator, but 10 Icelandic chicks went to their new pastures today. I love this breed not only because of their crested heads and wide variety of colors and patterns, but also because of their incredible survival instincts and their ability and willingness to forage, which means lower feed costs.

These Icelandic eggs are scheduled to hatch on Friday, September 18th, and will be ready for pickup on Saturday the 19th. Thirteen chicks are already spoken for, but if my historical 80% hatch rate holds, I’ll have three extras needing good homes (otherwise, they’ll join my flock).

These little cuties are taking their own sweet time joining the world. The first six have been moved to the brooder from Feathered Fortress Coops. Of the remaining nine, two have zipped, 3 have pipped, and I got a confirmation peep from one of the final four. So here’s to one more day of distraction. 🥰🐣🐥

It’s hatching day! While I’ve been on the computer designing new chicken cops and rabbit shelters for Feathered Fortress Coops, these little buddies have been hard at work slowly chipping out of their shells. I have 4 BCM and 8 light, slightly speckled from@my own flock, and 5 of varying shades of beautiful from frozencreekfarm
