🌾 Speaker Spotlight: Ellen Trahan 🌾

We are excited to welcome Ellen Trahan as a speaker at the upcoming Nebraska Grazing Conference!

A Nebraska custom grazer, agricultural educator, and advocate for innovative grazing practices, Ellen’s passion for grasslands and education began growing up on a ranch in the Northern Flint Hills. While earning her bachelor’s degree at Kansas State University, an internship with UNL Range & Forage Specialist Jerry Volesky led her to the Nebraska Sandhills, where she and her husband, Rex, now call home with their son.

As Co-Founder and Co-Manager of Rockin Flyin T Ranch, Ellen has helped build a custom grazing operation that utilizes virtual fencing technology to improve livestock management, land stewardship, and grazing flexibility.

Ellen also serves as an Agricultural Educator and FFA Advisor at Keya Paha County Schools, where she has secured more than $200,000 in grants and sponsorships to strengthen the program. She guides students in entrepreneurship and agricultural business management while encouraging leadership and innovation in agriculture.

With experience in forage and grazing research, public speaking, agricultural outreach, and custom grazing, Ellen is passionate about helping producers explore emerging technologies like virtual fencing and adaptive grazing systems—tools that can support profitable ranching, healthy ecosystems, and resilient rural communities.

A herd of goats can do what firefighters cannot always afford to do fast enough 🐐 Across California, cities and counties are hiring thousands of goats every summer to chew through dry brush, invasive weeds, and thick vegetation before wildfire season turns them into fuel. According to NPR, a herd of 300 goats in Glendale cleared 14 acres of dangerous brush in just two weeks. Fire Safe Marin reports that 1200 goats grazed over 600 acres in a single season 🔥
Goats reach where machines struggle, climbing steep canyons and hillsides while chewing through invasive plants like poison oak and star thistle without harm. Placer County fire officials call it a natural, low cost firebreak that mimics how wild landscapes once managed themselves 🌿 Sometimes the oldest tools work best.
