When you homeschool the world is your classroom. For the next month Victoria 's classroom will be Chevalier Ranch in Montana and her Uncle Thomas will be her teacher. She has shown incredible aptitude with our livestock at Rieley Brothers Farm and now will hone her skills more fully helping during calving season and caring for 700 cow/calf pairs.

I grew up in Texas, so everything BBQ in Texas begins with brisket. its a tough cut from the breast bone, but you cook it low and slow, melt the connective tissue, and fat, and its hard to find a better meal.

One of the questions I get most frequently about buying beef in bulk is "How much meat can I expect in my freezer?" This graphic is a good planning tool. Every animal is unique, total weight depends on how you want your order cut and if you get organ meats, suet and soup bones so it is not precise but a guideline.

On a brighter note-
Rieley Brothers Farm is blessed to grow our pigs out on delicious Lewes Dairy milk, heavy cream and chocolate milk. We are also blessed with willing granddaughters who can get a big job done with cooperation and cheerfulness.

I have seen lots of cute pictures of kids this morning enjoying the first snow of the year. From a farmer's perspective things are a little different. While we enjoy the beauty of God's handiwork the cold weather and snow means work..
At 7 am, without being asked, 12-year-old Victoria donned coveralls, gloves and boots to feed hay to several groups of cows. The adults who usually do it are already off to their off-farm jobs so she (and Nora who is opening gates) "took the bull by the horns" and is getting the job done.
