Love was in full bloom today! 💐❤️

Big Barn Blooms had the honor of creating these beautiful table centerpieces for a wedding rehearsal at St Clair Country Club. 🥰😇

Each arrangement was grown, gathered, and built by hand with bold farm-fresh blooms, soft greenery, and plenty of color. No two were exactly alike just three one-of-a-kind pieces made for one very special celebration! 😍🤩

CHOP & DROP! ♻️

We planted this buckwheat on August 5th, and in less than four weeks it grew into a thick, flowering canopy. We hit the timing 🎯 and chopped it before the seed matured then dropped all that green material right back onto the ground where it grew!

That’s Chop & Drop: no hauling it away and no wasting the nutrients. The buckwheat residue now covers the soil, holds moisture, suppresses w**ds and becomes food for the worms, fungi, bacteria and microorganisms building healthy ground beneath our feet. 🧬🧫♻️

We also double-cropped this patch with Daikon Radish our natural tiller! 💥 While the buckwheat worked above ground, those daikon taproots were driving downward, helping punch into compacted layers and opening pathways for air, water and future crop roots. 👀

And there’s a plan behind every step this is going to be our fall garlic patch! 🧄🇺🇸

Next on deck is winter rye in October. Then, at garlic-planting time, we’ll till only narrow strips through the rye and plant into those prepared rows. The ground between the rows stays covered and protected instead of being worked completely bare. ♻️
Buckwheat builds biomass.
Chop & Drop feeds the soil.
Daikon becomes our natural tiller.
Winter rye protects the ground.
Then the garlic goes in.🔥

And right beside it, our sunflowers are coming in strong alongside the Egyptian wheat, getting ready to provide more beautiful fall flowers, natural texture and habitat around the farm. 🌻💐

We’re not fighting nature we’re working with it to build stronger soil and stronger crops for years to come. ♻️🧬🧫🇺🇸💪💥

🦋 PART 2 OF 2. JUST ANOTHER DAY DOWN THE FLOWER ROWS 🌻🐝🐦

Sometimes you’ve just gotta slow down and look around. 👀😍

Walking these rows and watching the butterflies bounce from bloom to bloom is about as good as it gets. 🦋💐

We planted the flowers to share with folks, but somewhere along the way we ended up growing a pretty nice little home for everything else too. ♻️

The fennel is there for the Black Swallowtails, the zinnias keep the butterflies and bees busy, and we planted Egyptian wheat and sunflowers with the birds in mind too. 🐦🌻 They’ve got tall stalks to land on and plenty of seed heads to pick at when they’re hungry. Every now and then a hummingbird comes zipping through for a visit too. 🐝🦋🐦

That’s kinda how we like doing things around here.

💐Grow some flowers.
🐝Feed a few bees.
🦋Give the butterflies a place to raise their young.
🐦Leave some seed for the birds.
And let nature handle a little of the work herself. 🇺🇸♻️

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Take care of the ground and give nature a little room, and she’ll usually return the favor. 🌎🌱

Pretty hard to beat a summer day like this on the farm. 💐🇺🇸❤️

🦋🐝 OUR HOMEGROWN HABITAT ♻️💐

There’s a whole lot more growing at Big Barn Blooms than flowers. 👀🌸

This is Part 1 of a 2-part post showing some of the life that has moved into the habitat we’re creating here on the farm. Part 2 will be a video of the butterflies working the flower patch! 🦋🎥😍

We intentionally planted fennel as a host plant for Black Swallowtail butterflies, and judging by these caterpillars… they got the memo! 😂🦋 They’ll eat the fennel, grow, form their chrysalis and eventually become those beautiful swallowtails we see flying through the farm.

Our zinnias are loaded with Monarchs and other butterflies stopping in for nectar. 🦋🌸 The bees are constantly working the blooms. 🐝 And throughout the season we've even got hummingbirds swinging through for a visit and a quick meal from this homegrown buffet. 😍

And then there's that big guy… 🕷️ Around here I call it a banana spider more specifically, the big black-and-yellow garden spider. That incredible zig-zag web is hard to miss! Instead of being something we're trying to eliminate, spiders like this are another predator helping keep other insect populations in check.

That's what we're after.
Not a sterile field. A living one. ♻️🧬🧫

We don't believe every insect needs to be killed just because it's in the field. A healthy farm needs life.

We're learning how to work with nature instead of constantly fighting against it creating habitat while still producing the flowers, pumpkins and crops we love. 🇺🇸♻️💐

And seeing all this wildlife move in tells us we're doing something right. 💥📈🎯

🌱 FROM BARE GROUND TO A GREEN CARPET! 🤯

19 days in the ground.

While the pumpkins, sunflowers and porch packages have us excited for fall, we’re already preparing another fall crop our garlic! 🧄🎃🌻

We planted this buckwheat on August 5, and these time-lapse photos show how quickly it covered the field.

One question we hear often is: “How do you keep the w**ds down?”

We try not to leave good soil sitting bare. Buckwheat grows fast and creates a thick canopy that shades the ground and crowds out young w**ds. Its living roots protect and condition the soil, capture nutrients and produce a heavy layer of plant material that will be returned to the field as organic matter. ♻️

The key is timing. We’ll terminate the buckwheat before it produces mature seed, then plant winter rye. The rye will carry the job through the cooler months holding the soil in place, capturing leftover nutrients and continuing to suppress w**d growth. Then we’ll prepare our planting strips and put the garlic in the ground this fall. 💪

Buckwheat ➡️ Winter Rye ➡️ Fall Garlic ➡️ Next Summer’s Harvest 🌱🌾🧄

Soil protected. Beds prepared. Garlic growing.

The vines have nearly swallowed the rows, pumpkins are sizing up beneath the leaves, and our fall sunflowers are growing strong! 💪🔥

The first photos show this year’s pumpkin patch right now. The harvests, porch displays, and pumpkin-lined driveways are from previous seasons a little sneak peek at what we’re working toward again this fall. 👀🎃

For those just discovering us, Big Barn Blooms is a small local farm in Millstadt growing flowers, pumpkins, seasonal produce, and community. Everything is planted, tended, harvested, and built with care by our family.

We aren’t trying to be a big-box operation. We’re working to give our neighbors something homegrown, memorable, and worth coming back for. 🇺🇸
