MF Farm MF Farm is a small market garden, run by husband and wife team Jonathan and Amy Hill.

Located along the West Fork of the Little Walla Walla River, we aim to bring back small sustainable farming to provide produce to the Walla Walla Valley year round.

This has to be the most unappetizing thing I've ever made in my kitchen. Good thing it's for the dog!

His name is Pard. We think he is around 16 years old. He is mostly blind and can't eat hard kibble anymore. That's fine, cause I'm not sure the hard stuff is good for him anyway. I had been spoiling him with super expensive mail order food that was over $5 a day. I don't even eat $5 a day in food! But he wasn't always my dog. He was my grampa's dog, and I promised my grampa that I'd take care of Pard if grampa passed first.

Well, Grampa passed in 2018. I didn't have any problem spoiling Pard with the fancy food, but times are tough for everyone and like a lot of you, I am looking for anywhere to cut down cost. So, with some advice from my bestie and perusing A LOT of homemade dog food recipes, I came up with this one. It's pretty close to the spendy food he was eating, so here's to hoping he eats it!

Here is what's in it (in grams, I'm religious about weighing food because it really helps reduce food waste).

700 grams cooked sweet potato, 250g uncooked rice (I cook it before he eats it don't worry!), 340g of frozen peas n carrots, and 500 grams of chicken thigh, cut up into very small pieces.

I baked the sweet potato so it turned to mashed right out of the peel. I cooked the rice per the bags instructions. Then I cooked the chicken and peas/carrots together. I mixed it all up into a giant bowl. The sweet potato makes a great binder for the rest of the food. It makes a weeks worth of food for my Pard, and it cost me $7 to make. That's even cheaper than the cheapest canned dog food! Much healthier, too, I suspect.

We can't wait to get these peppers/tomatoes/tomatillos in the ground on Thursday!

We are probably some of the last people to plant this stuff in our 6B zone, but where we are is some of the lowest points of the Walla Walla Valley, and temperature inversion happens, even in May. Waiting until around the 20th of May ensures our plants stay safe from any cold setbacks.

One of the sugar rush peach pepper plants already has a pepper on it. We don't snip buds off, as research has shown no real difference from keeping the flowers or snipping them off in the health of the plant.

We are hoping that the early jalapenos we got from Territorial Seed are truly early. It would be nice to have some around the 4th of July!

Berries are coming in nicely, but as we just started the patch last year, we won't have much, and any sales will be limited to pint baskets only at the Milton Freewater Farmers Market for now. The good news is that most of them are everbearing, so we hope to have some throughout the season, and next year we might be able to start selling half flats!

Garden on, my friends!

We have 2 of these strawflowers, one in yellow and one in orange, that have now successfully overwintered since we planted them back in Spring 2022. They are always our first flowers to bloom, and they are very much beloved

We have another dark red and black strawflower that we seeded in a canvas bag planter last year that also successfully overwintered, but she doesn't have any blooms yet.

Every business HAS to have a boss.

So, when it's you and your hubby, it can be tenouous at best trying to figure stuff out.

I keep telling him that I'm OK with being told what to do, but I'm a little dumb and hand gestures don't always work.

Around here, Farmer Jon and Maid Amy may have roles they bring to the farm, but in the end Farmer Jon is BOSS.

Not only are we getting ready to seed for May crops, we overwintered some carrot and radish that could be ready soon!!! Stay tuned!
