I went into the barn at 9 am and left somewhere between 6:30- 7:00 pm. Today was shearing day, and what perfect weather we had! Sunny and in the low 70’s! I had quite a bit of barn work to do both before and after, and did not stop, sit down(until I got into the tub for a soak), or eat until this evening. Tomorrow will be a “slow day” for me, and rainy too. All 18 were sheared, had hooves trimmed, and were vaccinated.
My shearer, Al Meissner did a wonderful job, as usual! Thanks Al!!! The plan was to start with the large Valais group, but Shelby and Moon Pie marched on out from the catch pen, while everyone else tried to make themselves as invisible as possible. (This shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows these two, or has witnessed my church parish Blessing of the Flock😂) …some gorgeous fleeces from Gulf Coast Natives, Annabelle and her twins, Dempsey and Delores (no surprise here)as well as several of the Shetlands. They look so clean now!!(this will last a few days! ) 🤣 (Sorry, no pics of shearing…was busy sweeping the mat area between shearings, drawing up vaccines, and bagging/labeling fleeces)
Shearing 2026-DONE!!! 🥳🎉🐑🩷 (except the long wools who need a second shearing in the fall)

I currently have 4 Gulf Coast Natives in my flock after downsizing to make a major move almost 5 years ago. (Twins, Dempsey and Delores, were born here 3 years ago.) They are hardy, known to do extremely well in the southern heat and humidity, which was one of the reasons I chose them originally to add to my Shetland flock. They even do well here in the northern cold temperatures! Their fiber makes a yarn with give, producing some stretchiness.

Domestic sheep were introduced to North America by the Spanish who brought with them several hardy Iberian Churra sheep breeds capable of thriving in rough conditions and able to produce milk, meat and wool for settlers. The first introduction was in Florida in 1493, then Mexico in 1519 and again in 1540 what is now Southwestern US. These breeds are the foundation from which the Florida Cracker, Gulf Coast Native and Navajo-Churro breeds were developed.

Sheepjunkie studio shoppe will be open through the end of December (pending weather). OPEN TOMORROW 11-4) I have held over some of the products of the other vendors that were here during The Holiday Stroll. This includes hand spun/hand woven scarves, etc. from Keeping it Raveled, hanging wooden geese from Clucky Finds, hand carved/painted walking sticks from Milton Mills own Ms. Kit. Also made here in Milton Mills, “phone socks” …which are hand sewn. Great for working in the yard or on a job site, these protect the phone from the sun and can be hung on a hook. Lisa, the designer, will be here during select hours with fabric samples and will be able to discuss custom orders. Sheepjunkie products include yarn, roving and locks for needlefelting and spinning, art yarn, and original blank cards with sheep/farm photos and a new line of scripture blank (on inside) cards. There are some that would make great Christmas cards, and a few that feature Milton Mills! Gift cards available. Shop local for unique items! The studio is always open by appointment! Business number is 603 699-2971 (text or call) studio is located at 101 Jug Hill Road (Woolly Ridge Farm), Milton Mills, NH. Studio is located toward the barn, in the ell. Shetland, Gulf Coast Native, and F2 Valais Blacknose sheep are on site!
