Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be wine? Not the “mouth feel”, but the actual senses of a glass of wine? Does it get goosebumps if it’s chilled? Well, this is your rare opportunity to find out! Our tasting room and all the wine, even the entire barn, are very chilled this weekend (but not frozen!) as we await arrival of a new furnace and installation of a new chimney this week. We ARE open though and you are welcome to wear your tuque and snow pants if you like.

As an added bonus I bet Kathy would be willing to bring a few snow penguins inside to share your table. They make good conversation – just don’t pick up any proffered pebbles, else you will find yourself engaged in a long courtship ceremony that you might regret.

Oh, yeah. We also have a couple new wines available. The strawberry wine is by far our best batch yet (in my biased opinion); strawberry is surprisingly difficult to ferment to a decent flavor and color. The strawberry-grape wine also came out pretty decently, with a balanced flavor. Stop by this weekend, chill awhile, and be one of the cool guys/gals!

Here at Seedy Fruit we are committed to safety. We have regular safety meetings, hosted in turn by our vast array of skilled staff – so they can all practice their presentation and instructing skills. To show just how committed we are, we’ve decided to disclose one of our more unfortunate incidents, resulting in a particularly impressive lesson learned.

This training was “How to Use a Plunger”, and Kathy wants me to emphasize the fact that this is (was?) a brand new, clean plunger. We understand that the employee will eventually recover with proper and extended therapy.

As previously disclosed my Facebook skills are a bit limited… hoping this actually shows the video.

“And Now For Something Completely Different.” Doesn’t that inspire you to go the Monty Python section of your local video store, for something to watch on this snowy Sunday afternoon? Or maybe it reminds you of wine.

We have SIX new additions today!

Pear Wine: “Opens with toasted oak aromas and layers of ripe apple and vanilla. The finish is long and warm with hints of citrus.” Well, not really - I just copied that from somebody else’s website because I couldn’t make up something that good on my own. Our pear wine tastes a lot like the pears from the tree by the driveway. Go figure.

Elderberry Wine – Not much to say on this one; pretty much the same as the previous batches we’ve done, because those always seem to sell out fast.

Raspberry Wine – Yep, another repeat. The same mix that got the gold medal a few months ago. Maybe this one tastes similar - or maybe not. It’s not my job to tell you what you should like.

Crabapple Wine – VERY tart! I’m thinking this will mellow out beautifully, in which case I’m going to hide some. By the way, you should like this.

Blueberry Maple Syrup Wine – The Government made me add the word “syrup”, though I thought it was obvious and a simple waste of ink. Oh, well, I lose again. Imagine pouring this wine on your pancakes, with a hot mug of Grade B syrup to wash it down with.

Cherry Wine – This was also a bit a challenge to get approved. I think of it as a fortified wine, since I’m mixing our Cherry Spirits into our Cherry Wine, to yield 23 percent ABV. The same government agency determined that “fortified” wasn’t appropriate though – perhaps they wanted to save me some ink. So it’s “cherry wine” with a light tap, but sparing you the “kick” of our 80 proof spirits.

Just a reminder though… with the exception of the Cherry Wine, these are all fresh, immature wines. The flavors are still developing and mellowing, so you could wait for the movie to end. On the other hand, sometimes we sell out while the wine is still young. But that’s okay - we don’t mind telling you what you missed.

A couple days ago Em and I were watching reruns of Saturday Night Live, and during an ad she asked me about all the named days in December. I started explaining about Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and so on – I even mentioned Barre’s Flannel Friday – when I finally realized she was focused on a skit and ignoring me completely. Dogs can be so rude sometimes! So I shut up and watched with her, something about Wendy and Doug and family. But I was, once again, wrong. As soon as the skit ended Em turned back to me and simply said “Whiny Wednesdays”. At least that’s what I think she said; I still have a rough time with her British accent. Maybe she said “blimey pennies”, but that wouldn’t make much sense, would it?

Em’s ingenuity shines through again! From here on out we declare every Wednesday in December to be a Whiny Wednesday. Make sure you are well stocked to celebrate accordingly with proper beverages and watching reruns of The Whiners on SNL. And feel free to stop by (on Thursdays through Sundays, or by appointment or chance on other days), if you want to whine with us.

Want to earn some money? Want to save on taxes? I have an idea. I haven’t discussed this with Em yet (she’s sleeping and I've learned to let her lie when she's like that), but I’m sure she’ll endorse it.

I understand that it now costs 3.69 cents to manufacture a penny. Therefore we should all mail our pennies to the US Mint. Make sure to include a self-addressed return envelope, and an invoice charging 2.5 cents per penny. The savvy money people at the mint will instantly recognize the bargain and gladly pay accordingly to save taxpayers money. Then bring your proceeds here and celebrate with us; we’ll be waiting.

Today’s breakfast is offered in homage to my Hessian ancestors as imagined 1,000 years ago, on All Saints Day, 1025. It’s a simple-yet-hearty meal, beginning with a rugged slice of rye bread (thanks, Maria!) heated on a tin toaster that works perfectly in a fireplace – cook one side at a time. Have I mentioned my toaster collection? Add a thick slab of hard cheese, preserved for the coming winter with applewood smoke. Wash it down with a hefty stein of blackberry wine. The ancient elders would have called that vessel a “steinzeug-krug” – what a fun word to say, especially after emptying it a couple times!

Sound good? We can set you up for a similar breakfast, except for the bread; I’m not sharing that. You are welcome to borrow one of my “perfect toasters” though. Seedy Fruit has the rest of your meal in stock.

We are proud to announce that we now offer a full line of smoked and flavored cheese crafted locally by Cheeky Cheeses. The vast majority of their selection is based upon Cabot Cheese, with spices added and then cured with applewood smoke. Cheeky Cheeses (“cheese with attitude”) was born about a month ago and has already become wildly popular at farmers markets in the Champlain Islands and at UVM Medical Center, with flavors such as Holy Voodoo (my choice for All Saints Day, of course), Maple Bacon Bourbon Swiss, and Jalapeno Naughty Dog Pepper Jack. Some of their offerings are now available at Keeler’s Bay Variety in South Hero, and we have a full selection of their various flavorings. Please see the Cheeky Cheese page for more information!

And, of course, the wine. As of today we are restocked with blackberry wine (that silver medal winner from a couple months ago) – and finally – Pepper Wine is back! This one is jalapeno, so it should be a bit kinder on the hiccups than our previous ghost pepper version was, and the jalapeno has a pretty decent, slightly sweet flavor. I recommend the Blackberry if you’re looking for a leisurely breakfast, and the Pepper if you want more of a jolt to kick start your winter morning.

Awhile back I pruned our cherry tree. Trying to remember the sage advice from Ron Hackett, I tend to prune heavily – after all, it will grow back, sometimes. In this case I cut nearly all the branches that bonked me in the head every time I mowed. I was pretty proud of my accomplishment, until my loving wife gently pointed out with her usual commonsense (I’m so envious of that!), that I removed nearly all the branches she could reach for harvesting. At least the birds have been very happy with the yields since then, though our portion has been significantly reduced.

We’ll be putting our latest batch of cherry wine out on the shelves today, made mostly from cherries generously donated by my cousin at Allenholm Farm. We hope you enjoy it. And feel free to mow a bit while you’re here, and discover for yourself how pleasant it is to not bang your head on so many branches.

We'll be closed today for our annual pilgrimage to the World's Fair. Sorry for the inconvenience, but we'll be back in the shop tomorrow to regale visitors with results of the oxen pulling. Yes, those guys ARE really heavy, and they drag their feet too when you try to pull them.

Why say in a hundred words what can be said in a thousand for the same price??

I didn’t do well in Economics – which probably isn’t much of a surprise to anyone who knows me. We have based the winery on a fairly simple business model: customers pay us money, we provide them wine, and then we listen to their unabashed opinions of the wine. We enjoy the process and we understand the model.

Occasionally though we receive mailings proposing a different business approach: we send wine AND money to a national organization, and they provide us an unabashed opinion of the wine. I don’t quite understand how we make money out of this but apparently it’s “good marketing” – who am I to question real Economists and Business People?

So we recently tried it out. We sent three types of wine to the 2025 National Small Producer Wine Invitational in Virginia. “Small Producer” limits the competition to wineries producing less than 5,000 cases per year; we produce about 50 cases per year so we figured we were eligible.

Libation Magazine (in case you haven't received this month's publication yet) released the results this week. Much to our surprise our Blackberry Wine received a silver medal, and our Raspberry Wine won a gold. The Blueberry Wine was awarded a double gold medal as the Best of Class of all “Fruit Wines, Vermouth and Other Wine Types”.

Now we await the inevitable flood of phone calls from around the country… “Do you have any Blueberry Wine?” Nope, sold out a couple weeks ago. “Oh – how about Raspberry Wine?” Nope, sold out. “Oh – how about Blackberry Wine then?” Yep, got that! “Great! Will you send us some?” Nope, we don’t ship. “Well, how can we get some?” Stop by the barn this weekend; be careful where you step.

Yes, we’re kinda proud. Em is actually dancing today (she is surprisingly light on her toes), but I’m not sure if that’s about the awards or if she’s just making fun of my economic prowess.
