Yesterday’s build-your-own grain bowl bar at Milton High School featured our signature Shawarma Bowl. Students layered homemade shawarma-seasoned chicken over their choice of grain and little leaf lettuce and topped it with pickled onions, crispy chickpeas, hummus, cucumber, roasted sweet potatoes, and our homemade herb yogurt dressing. Fresh flavors, vibrant colors, and endless combinations made this a student favorite!

The high school students give out awards each year to a faculty member, and this years Freshmen class award went to our very own Deli Bar/Acai Bar team member Giancarlo!

“On behalf of the freshmen class, we would like to award Mr. Francesconi for the Freshman Appreciation Award. Giancarlo is always going out of his way to make everyone smile. All of us have mentioned how there have been times where they have been having a bad day at school and not in a bright mood and going up to the lunch line and seeing Giancarlo makes our days. We also notice how that goes a long way with the other lunch aid staff he’s always smiling and making them laugh and it goes a long way.”

We are so happy when others recognize the hard work and positive attitudes our kitchen staff has!

Tucker elementary served a garden salad made with lettuce from Little Leaf Farms in Devens, MA today!
What makes that cool?
🥬 It’s grown hydroponically (no soil—just water + nutrients straight to the roots)
🥬From planting to harvest, the process is completely hands-free
🥬Uses up to 90% less water compared to traditional farming
🥬No pesticides needed because it’s grown indoors
Andthe big one—distance.
About 97% of lettuce in the U.S. comes from places like California and Arizona, traveling around 3,000 miles to get here. This lettuce? Delivered across New England within 24 hours of being picked.
Local, fresh, and sustainably grown—on the menu and making a difference

Plus students sampled Jicama Slaw made with jicama, carrots, cabbage, cilantro and a limey dressing!

Fun facts about jicama:
•Jicama (pronounced “HEE-kuh-muh” or “HICK-uh-muh”) is a root vegetable native to Mexico and Central America.

•It has a mildly sweet taste and crunchy texture similar to an apple, and is typically eaten raw after peeling.

•Jicama is part of the potato family and is a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and potassium.

Cinco de Mayo at Milton High!

We celebrated with homemade Birria Pork Tacos—tender pulled pork simmered in a rich, flavorful sauce made with onions, peppers, garlic, cilantro, tomatoes, and spices. Each taco was layered with melted cheese between two local corn tortillas from Mi Tierra in Hadley, MA, and served with extra birria sauce for dipping.

Students also stopped by our build-your-own fruit station to create custom fruit cups and add a sprinkle of TajĂn for a sweet and tangy twist!
