We have been celebrating October’s Harvest of the Month, district-wide, with local pears from Fix Farm! The Fix Brothers Fruits Farm is a fifth-generation, family-owned and operated orchard in Hudson, NY.

At Milton High: Pear, Kale and Cabbage Salad with Citrus Dressing:
This refreshing salad features crisp kale and cabbage with local pears, tossed in a bright, zesty citrus vinaigrette.

Our elementary and middle school students also enjoyed fresh pears from Fix Farms as well!

We celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th- October 15) district wide! Some local items featured like Mi Tierra Corn Tortillas from Springfield, Ma as well as some new items!

Items and their origins!

Cubano Sandwich- Havana, Cuba
Jicama Slaw- Jicama is native from Mexico and Central America, but the slaw concept has popularized from the states
Pupusa- El Salvador and Honduras
Burrito- While burritos originated from Northern Mexico, the burrito "bowl" became popularized in the states.
Pico de Gallo- Mexico
Horchata- Has many origins, but the version with rice, or "Horchata de arroz" the version we made, has been popularized in Mexico. Other Hispanic countries have their own unique versions!
Tacos- Mexico
Tamale- Mexico and Guatemala (photo not featured at Pierce)

Congratulations to Milton School Food Service as the October 2025 winner! Serving up Turkey Gyro Bowls (Recipe: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pazUTDqk5HXVXpA2dlOutZUb8JWd3EG-/view) alongside a popular cucumber salad recipe that went viral on TikTok (Recipe: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_gvyX_FTWrDOiZIrgolZmTU_MFcXAAzx/view), that is bringing a student-centered trend from social media to the cafeteria! Bowls featured homemade tzatziki made from Greek yogurt from Cabot Creamery Cooperative (Cabot, VT) and feta from Maplebrook Farm (North Bennington, VT) celebrating the abundance of local dairy from the region. The meal was rounded out by Empire apples from Pine Hill Orchards (Colrain, MA).

So honored that Milton Public Schools have been nominated for the Terrific Tray for the month for October! We are always striving to serve local foods and cultural meals in a way our students can relate to!

Keeping an eye on food trends helps keep relevant and engaging. Exciting new menu items!

At Milton High, we served Tikka Masala, using a locally made Masala Sauce from CommonWealth Kitchen using locally grown tomatoes!

We paired this dish with Curry Roasted Cauliflower.

NEW MENU ALERT: American Chop Suey at Pierce Middle School!

Fun Fact: The name is actually inspired by the Chinese dish "Chop Suey", because they are both pasta with an assortment of ingredients mixed it, but this version of the dish is originated from New England!
