We are deeply saddened to share that David Bratož of Rogovila has p@ssed away. To us, David was far more than a winemaker or business partner—he was a friend. To Lara he was a husband, and to Lana, Naja, and Jona, a beloved father. Our hearts are with them in this unimaginable loss.
We first met David by chance. We kept seeing his wines on social media and try as we might we could never track down who this elusive winemaker was. It got to the point where we finally just gave up. Then, a few weeks later, while traveling in Vipava Valley, asked us if we’d like to meet his friend for a beer who just happened to be a winemaker. Never ones to turn down a beer, we agreed. A few hours later we found ourselves in Orehovica, Slovenia in the Rogovila cellar. Life is funny sometimes.
David poured us wines from his friends and neighbors and even bottles he’d collected from trips overseas and finally, after a few hours, he sheepishly asked if we would like to try his wines. David was never shy to throw praise at his winemaking colleagues in Slovenia and around Europe. He had the ability to find brightness even on the darkest days, and this was a trait we loved in him.
There’s been many jokes made about the Rogovila cellar being known as the “black hole.” Once you enter you may never leave, and we can attest to this fact. But it’s not that you don’t ever leave, it’s that you don’t WANT to leave. We’ve spent more hours than we can count sitting at the table, dining on Lara’s deliciously prepared dinner and sipping wines and catching up. No visit with David and Lara was a quick affair, and we loved every minute of it.
If you’ve been fortunate enough to meet David you know what a generous and giving person he was, you know his laugh was the most contagious laugh around, and you know exactly what we mean when we say David was always a bright light of laughter, fun, and friendship. We will miss him dearly and are grateful to be among so many around the world who were lucky enough to call him a friend. Lara, Lana, Naja, and Jona — our thoughts are with you now and always.
